Revision with a toddler? Anyone dare to do that?

Recommended Posts

I have a 14 month old ... If approved for band to sleeve revision he will be 15 months, walking and about 24 pounds. I know you can't lift 20 pounds for 4-6 weeks.... Do you think 4 pounds makes that big a difference after about 3-4 weeks post op? I know I have to ask my doc and I will... But has Anyone dared to do this with a toddler???

Thanks as always!!!!

Been there, DO NOT lift more than 10#. This is too big a deal to mess up. I stuck to it, sit low enough and allow him to climb in your lap, do not lift under any circumstance. If you can't adhere-- wait and don't do it--- people do this everyday w c-sections, gallbladders post partum, hernia repairs-- its not the procedure, it will you obey and not lift. Tantrums will pass, you'll get good at getting off the floor. Good luck !

My son was 14 months when I did it but I had lots of help my husband lifted him for me for a couple weeks. So I just recommend having help for awhile.

I just did it with a very active 2 year old. Will not lie and say it is not easy. They do not understand why you cant be the same mommy you were a week ago and lift them up. I have a lot of support to help. Be prepared for tantrums, we have had several but they will pass. On thing that has helped was showing the incisions, has helped understanding of why mommy is not lifting.

I did it in June with a 16 month old who weighed 30+ pounds at the time. I sat on the floor as much as possible so he could come to me and changed him on the floor. My partner was very helpful and did most of the work. I was lucky enough that I healed quickly and was able to pick him up for short periods of time after only 2 weeks. It was 4 weeks until I could hold him as much as I used to. The biggest problem I had was avoiding his accidentally hitting my incisions.

If you have the help and can stick to the restrictions, do it. Everyone talks about how much better the sleeve is than the band. Before I had the revision, I knew it would be better, but thought they were exaggerating (sp?). They weren't. It is a MAJOR difference that has changed my life and helped me reach my goal in just 3 months.

I stuck to my lifting limits as much as possible for the first 6 weeks. I recruited help and used it!! But with my kids 2 & 3 when I revised, I knew that any temporary inconvenience would be far outweighed by the untold number of extra years I will now get with them. I am a better mom now. I am a more active mom and the kid of mom they deserve. My weight no longer holds my kids back, and that has, by far, been the best reward in their whole journey!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
