Great article as I've been considering doing crossfit.

Only issue is this myth that muscle weighs more than fat. 16 ounces is 16 ounces. A pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of dirt.

Muscle IS more dense but weight is weight. Thanks for posting this. It was totally informative.

Oh I know! didn't we have to do those word problems about which weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks? (At least I had to in India). That stuff drives me crazy. :)

Glad you enjoyed the rest of it.

I love crossfit! I started it two weeks ago (still pre op). But today I noticed I wasn't as winded walking around, I've had more energy than normal and my back hasn't been bothering me as much. My whole core feels stronger. Still a month out from surgery, but hoping this change will help me recover a little easier.

I bet you it will. My husband was in better cardiovascular shape than me before the surgery since I'd been having joint pain and too much travel. He's older than me, he's 60, but has recovered quite well.

You're doing the smart thing. Good for you.

What kind of barbaric outfit is this?

" There are no smoothie bars or aerobics studios in one's peripheral vision, just the Iron bar you'll hang from, the weights you'll thrust up above your head and the ground you'll drip your perspiration and occasional tears into until you feel as though you've become a part of the place. "

No smoothie bar? I suppose there isn't a concierge or onsite masseuse either?!

I think the article should point out, instead of making the assumption that everyone knows it is refering to volume, that muscle weighs more than fat per volume.....which is does. A cubic foot of muscle does weigh more than a cubic foot of fat. Or like you basically stated........a pound of muscle is more dense and takes up less space than a pound of fat..... would probably be a better way to say it. :) I've seen on this site at some point, where they show a pound of fat (an image) beside an image of a pound of muscle.....quite graphic. But makes a good point.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
