Dehydration. I now have one cup of regular coffee every morning. Better than the whole pot I would consume a day hehe

I used to be a black coffee addict. I've tried coffee twice in the past 2 weeks and I've totally lost my taste for it. It was the hardest thing to give up pre-op, and now that it's allowed I don't even want it.

Caffeine also can irritate the stomach and GI tract (mildly.) For some people, it acts as even a mild laxative in the morning--some say it "gets you moving" in more ways than one ;)

Don't do it. Dehydration is not fun and can happen quickly. Drink Decaf or none at all.

My dr says its not the caffeine they are worried about, but the acid causing an ulcer in our stomach. She says coffee/tea is ok after the first couple on months. What I do to keep the chance of too much acid down, is to buy the low acid French roast at Trader Joes, and then cold brew it and store it in my refrigerator. Then I just measure some out and add hot Water. I love it! The cold brewing also reduces the acid. I also put a little in my Protein Drink sometimes.

My dr. agrees with Chinamama's - caffeine is not dehydrating:

but the acid in coffee can be problematic in such a small stomach. My dr. advises patients to avoid coffee for six months after surgery because of that, not because of caffeine.
