Pain 12 days post-op and swollen tummy -- Normal?

Recommended Posts

This is not new pain, just the same left side pain near the incision where they pulled my stomach. The incision site and particularly right below it still hurt, a bit more when I drink anything. Finally seeing some progress in my swelling -- I am now only 2 lbs. over my pre-op weight! -- but my tummy is still pretty swollen. Is this pretty typical at this point in recovery?

While everyone's journey and recovery are different, it sounds like a normal progression. Continue to drink Water, walk, follow your doctor's instructions..and don't hesitate to CALL your doctor if you're concerned! Doctors would much rather have you call about a minor pain/annoyance and reassure you that you're recovering just fine than deal with a major crisis if something's gone ignored.

Have you had a post-op appointment yet? If not, I'd definitely schedule one in order to address all of the little questions that have popped up. I saw my doctor at 6 days post-op and felt much better!

Sounds normal. My incisions were tender but not painful at that point but the tummy felt swollen for a while.

It was normal for me. I started wondering if my stomach was ever going to feel "normal" again. It was around the three week mark before I stopped worrying.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
