I've lost 41 pounds since my June 19 surgery, and 62 pounds since the start of the year. My question today is why do I suddenly have worse back pain after weight loss than I did before? I thought my back would feel better after all the weight loss, but lately it seems to be getting worse. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know why that is? I'm seeing my dr anyway soon so I can also ask him then. And I am exercising, walking 45-60 min 5 days a week.

My cousin, 41, had the sleeve in June 2012. She's lost about 120 lbs and has TERRIBLE back pain now. We were in Disney World a few weeks ago and she had to rent a scooter cause she couldn't walk that far. She finally had an MRI and it turns out she has quite a few bulging discs that were previously being held in by fat deposits. Crazy, right?? I don't know if that's what's causing your pain, but I'd suggest an MRI just to get it checked out.

If it does turn out to be bulging discs, I had a lot of luck with the Laser Spine Institute. Two years ago I had a really severe bulging disc that had me almost paralyzed, I couldn't move at all without excruciating pain. Had the surgery in Nov 2011 and as soon as I woke up it was like a miracle, no pain at all. Recovery was VERY easy too. My cousin is looking into it now. Let me know if you need any more info on LSI. Hoping your pain is resolved soon!!

there was another post on here and Laura-ven said something about how different parts of our bodies start to hurt when we lose weight. I'm paraphrasing, but it's almost like our center of gravity shifts as our body size changes, and with it come strange aches and pains.

Did you sprain it do you think, or is it more a consistent ache?

I sprained mine today while doing nothing more complicated than taking a shower. Don't ask me how. Now I'm hobbling around the house like an old woman. :(

I am 13 days post-op and my back has been killing me!!! It hurt intensely the first week and then the pain calmed down, and now it's back to where it was :(

That is crazy! It makes sense though because everything shifts. I'll ask my PCP for an MRI. Laser surgery sounds great. Thanks for the info.

It's more like when I've been standing a long time it starts hurting bad. I don't think it's a sprain. Hope your back gets better! And yes I can see about the center of gravity shifting. I was thinking today that maybe my skin is hanging differently after losing weight.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
