Thank you everyone for the feedback. I will be going ahead with the bypass. I am slowly coming around to the idea. My GERD is quite severe' date=' and no acid medication has alleviated my pain. I just received my date for Halloween and am so excited! I still have more research to do, but things are going great. Thank you all again, you made some great valid points![/quote']

I had to do bypass also severe reflux.

I don't think your going to get a different opinion from a different doctor. Honestly, that is a medical reason.....a real reason to choose bypass over the sleeve. Sorry :( You'll do great though. My husband had the bypass in 2004 and he is doing great.

I had a pretty severe case of gerd which is being managed by nexium. It has not nearly as bad as it was before I was sleeved and have lost weight. However, each person is different.

You seem to be at peace with the bypass now, but like another poster mentioned, the severe reflux could be caused by a hiatal hernia. My manometry results came back borderline and the follow up Upper GI revealed I have a small-medium hiatal hernia. If yours is larger it could cause severe issues. My Dr said it's a simple repair he will do while he's in there for the sleeve and it should resolve nearly all of my acid reflux issues. He mentioned that they do tons of repairs of hernias during sleeve surgery and most people just don't realize they have them. Just another idea to consult with your Dr about if you still want to do the sleeve.

I had pretty bad GERD before my surgery but it had only come with my weight so surgeon and I hoped it would disappear with weight loss. Straight after surgery I was so much better that I was able to drop from 40 to 20mg Nexium.

Around 4 months out and 22kg lighter (2/3 of my total excess weight) it started getting worse. I am currently taking 80mg Nexium with poor control of symptoms - very painful and affecting my oesophagus, throat and Eustachian tubes (ears!). Seeing the surgeon tomorrow and hoping he has some "magic" suggestions.

I also wanted the simplest possible procedure and am not at all keen on bypass, but I know there can be serious health consequences if my dr and I can't get these symptoms under control.

Knowing that a bypass revision is always possible, is it worth talking to your dr to see about doing the sleeve in the hope that you are amongst the lucky ones whose GERD is not made worse by the sleeve? It would be nice to keep it simple if you could - ongoing need for vitamin/mineral supplementation is something I'm keen to avoid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
