no two week liquid pre op diet

Recommended Posts

I have been reading all of the posts about two weeks liquid pre op diet. my hospital requires 13 day high Protein, low fat, low carb ( 20g - 60g per day, close to 20 as you can get ). the day before surgery is clear liquid only. and no nasty colon cleanse night before. I am very lucky

My doc had me do a 2 day liquid diet, and then for two weeks post-op. It's basically Protein shakes like the nectar...I can have milk or soy milk so I have been doing one shake a day with soy milk and some left over Body by Vi shake mix.

My surgery isn' til nov 18 and I have to do a 2 week liquid diet before that. I have my sleeve class on oct 31 which will I guess explain what alll that entails. At this point I'm just confused. It seems like just consuming liquids I'm going to be hungry all the time. I don't get it. I mean I understand the concept of Protein Shakes and how they are supposed to be filling. I'm drinking them now as Snacks during the day because I have to lose 15 pounds before surgery. I just don't see how only drinking liquids only with no food is going to be filling at all. Seems like its going to be a miserable experience. Can I blend up fruit in them? Can I put coffee in them and make a frappe?

What really helped me in the past when doing liquid diets was to have lots of Fiber...I would make a large glass of sugar free orange Fiber mix and that would actually fill me up for a few hours. Give it a shot.

I actually had a meeting with my surgeon today (along with 4 other people) and he went over the surgery, the pre-op diet, the do's and don'ts. One woman said that she was having a hard time with the pre-op diet and he said that as long as she kept it low fat and low carb that was fine. He commented that it was really more important that the men be on the pre-op than women. Stated that because men carry most of the weight in their stomach the amount of fat is greater than in women.

Mine was 2 weeks prior. Protein Shakes for 2 meals and Soup at dinner. 2 Snacks allowed of fat free cottage cheese, sugar free pudding or Jello. I lost 15 pounds on it. 2 days prior, Clear Liquids only.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
