Tricare, Fort Bragg

Recommended Posts

My husband is retired military. We live near Fort Bragg, NC. My pcm submitted my bariatric surgery referral July 5, 2013. I was pleasantly surprised when Tricare referred me to Womack Army Hopital's bariatric clinic. July 22, 2013 I attended first class at Womack. I had my first one on one with surgeon, Dr Jennifer Perkins today and I am scheduled for a sleeve September 16, 2013. I am happy because Tricare requires 6 month dr supervised diet ( not necessary at Womack), Tricare does not cover sleeve (Womack performs sleeve), Tricare does not cover nutritionist and I am seeing one at Womack. All services at mtf are free except small daily fee while staying in hospital. I think it is like 12 or 13 dollars. I will find out Friday at pre-op. Almost all items on checklist are easy if you are up to date since your medical records are onsite. A little over 10 weeks from pcm referral to surgery date. No further insurance approval needed. Follow ups too.

So glad you had such a great experience! Mine was the opposite. I had to fight Tricare for 7 years to get my sleeve. I finally got it in June, but only after my hubby retired, and we got on his insurance through his civilian job. We have Tricare as a secondary, but they still aren't covering any of the surgery. So glad you had other options!

Tricare covers bariatric surgery when its done at a MTF, but there are only a few hospitals that do the surgery. My hubby is active duty so everything was covered for me.

i II really like her too. she really seems to care. the department is in transition since jasmine and caron left so there was a few rough weeks getting stuff together. I was told no retirees when I called but then Tricare surprised me in a good way.

Dr. Perkins has been so great- she did my sleeve and also took out my gallbladder two months later, so I have seen her quite a bit these past weeks, plus I also work at Womack so I see her around as well. I was lucky to have everything done before Jasmin and Caron left, but I know things are crazy now.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
