RTD or Protein Powder

Recommended Posts

I have been drinking premier and at the moment I really like it but I wanted to get some others. I got a sample of Unjury and with milk it is ok but with water... gross! If you use powder which one and do you use milk or Water? Milk adds on a lot of sugar (12g) for skim.

My surgeon doesn't want us to use RTD Protein so I use powder. Before surgery I was using Body Fortress chocolate Peanut Butter but it does have 7 Gm of carbs. I tried the Body Fortress whey isolate but it only comes in vanilla &, after surgery, it is sickly sweet. I've changed to unflavored powder & can mix it with any liquid. I bought some unflavored powder at GNC because I couldn't wait for some to be shipped. I did order a 10-pound bag of Now Foods unflavored whey from Amazon & it should arrive next week.

I use Matrix brand and have used nectar recommend both from my surgeon. I use skim milk. Skim milk gives you 8 grams of Protein. Both brands of powder I use has 23grams of Protein? So total of 31 grams of protein. I have a shake for breskfast cuz I am always on the go. I bought the unflavored Unjury and it gags me. I tried it so many ways and no luck for me. So I have a entire tub of wasted Protein Powder. I put it in a canister & tossed the original container. Dumb me. :(

Do you use milk or Water? I wonder why your Dr was against RTDs.

I use Water. They told us in the class that the Protein starts to breakdown within 30 minutes of mixing so you get better quality Protein with the powder.

I am really not impressed with any of the vanilla or chocolate RTDs of any sort. Unjury chocolate is fine with milk, gross with water. I use a product called AMP Wheybolic from GNC (Chocolate flavored) that is a little pricey but tastes great with either water or skimmed milk That is what I have for Breakfast. i eat normal food but supplement with Syntrax Protein drinks (Fuzzy Navel flavor is my favorite).

My doctors office offers all kinds of Protein powders and RTD bottles. I really like the chocolate light Core Power. It's the "cleanest" Protein Drink I've come across. It's horribly expensive (to me anyway) at $3.00 a bottle. But since I'm still on liquid post op diet I'm allowing a splurge of one a day.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
