Anyone Else Not Have To Do a Pre-op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I had my seminar last night and my surgeon said he does not require a pre-op diet unless your current weight is very high and would complicate surgery. I see most people on here have to do it and I was just wondering if anyone else does not have to.

I only have 2 days all liquid and I was surprised when my Dr said that. I was fully expecting him to tell me 2 weeks just like everyone else

I didn't have to do one, either, beyond the usual day before surgery thing. Generally, it's the surgeons who are more experienced with the sleeve that don't need those diets, so be happy!

My surgeon has done over 3500 bariatric procedures all over the world. He said last night that other bariatric surgeons send him the more riskier patients.

I have a 1-day liquid diet the day before surgery - not clears, either. So, I'm doing my own version of a pre-op diet in hopes to lose a bit more weight for my liver.

Same here - only liquid diet the day before.

I think it also depends on your BMI and how hi it is.

I did not have one either. I think every doctor is just different. I had asked my doctor about shrinking the liver. He said in his opinion if you have fatty liver it is not going to be shrunk in two weeks. However, a lot of doctors believe it is necessary and works.

I have been told that I will not be required to have a pre op diet but I am considering it anyway. It seems like there may be some benefit in helping the surgery go well.

No diet for me required. Doc said only for BMI 50 and above. I am doing one meal a day and the rest liquids just to make sure. So ready for my Sept. 16 day of surgery. Good luck to everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
