I've had several er visits since my sleeve on 8-27. I even had another surgery several days after bc I had such bad shoulder pain. Everything was ok, no leak. I don't know if I'm a big baby or what. The only thing that has worked is the intravenous dilaudid. I'm honestly considering medical marijuana (obtained illegally of course) to make the pain stop. Is anyone else having truly horrible pain?

I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain. My husband and I both had VSG the same day and the pain was worse the first day and by the 3rd day we didn't need any pain medication. We felt well enough to return to work, I did chores around the house. We just moved slightly slower and were a little more tired than normal.

That being said, everyone is different. My husband and I were probably lucky. However, I don't think you should still be in that amount of pain. I strongly suggest going back to your Dr and keep insisting on tests until they figure out what is causing the pain. ER Dr's are not always the best when it comes to treating post VSG patients w complications. Please see your Dr ASAP and insist on further testing until you get answers.

I hope you feel better soon!!

If it's shoulder pain, it's probably gas from the operation. It can become pretty painful. If you are experiencing any fever or items abnormal though, please see a doctor. As with all things gas related, this too shall pass.

The back pain was horrible for me personally. However, based on my research, I already knew that was attributed to gas pain. Heating pads were my savior. I sat in my recliner with a heating pad on my back and one on my tummy. Got up and walked every hour to loosen up the gas and get it flowing. Pain was the worst the first 3 days, and it really subsided after the 5th day. Went awat completely before the end of week 2. I still felt it in my left shoulder every time I exercised though, especially that first month. It was only when I exercised...which was weird. Anyway, like another poster said: This Too Shall Pass!!! Hope you fell better sooner rather than later!

I hope you are feeling better soon! Unfortunately not everyone is going to have an easy recovery. At least you went to the doctor to rule out any other trouble. Did you already have your gallbladder removed? This can cause shoulder pain but I am inclined to think it is gas. Hang in there it will get better and if it doesn't press your doctor for more answers. :)

I was in horrible pain for about eight days. Had to stop taking the Tylenol 3i was sent home with due to a codeine allergy. I thought I was going to die! Walking is the best thing to help pain- I promise!

I must say thatI had to do the marijuana yesterday my initial surgery was on July 15th and my stomach did a flip and i had to have it fixed and that was exactly one month away Aug. 15th i had a very different recovery the second time around... Yesterday was the worst day and i didn't drink enough so it was prob dehydration... My boyfriend bright me some pot, i smoked, and i felt sooooo much better and was able to drink and eat a lil more... Don't get me wrong i didn't get all loaded like a Stoner but i felt like a while new person in just mins!!! :) Trust me i didnt get the munchies, eat up the whole cup of Soup and bust my gut... But just enought to feel like a "normal" person.

I had an awful recovery. I'm 9 months out now so I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

About 13 weeks in and out of hospital and lots of pain meds - the worse of it all was detoxing from the dilated. 5 days of pure hell. So please use pain meds with reason - even when dr's are offering it so freely. Remember WLS patients have a risk of developing dependencies on drug, alcohol...etc.

When it comes to gas pain - heating pad really helped. I didn't get better until I started moving around - try and stay on your feet as much as possible. And than drink drink drink.

Two things: a. Pot made the head hunger indistinguishable from real hunger. b. If you are super pain sensitive you will be in pain for a while as its major surgery and not everybody recovers right away (a surprise to me). You run a higher chance of addiction to dilauded than to pot.

The Complication was that my stomach flipped/twisted over the doctor did the tube down the throat procedure and found out that way, they then took me into another surgery and sewed my new sleeve to my muscles in my abdominal walls... My doctor says that one in. 100 patience has this happen to them... Btw he also says it was nothing at all that i did wrong just pure dumb luck :/ which i don't know why he would lie? The first time around with the recovery was great until three Weeks out i started to have sharp unbearable pain on the right side of my abdomen, so i went to the hospital where i would stay for two Weeks then come back two days after released due to wretching and not being able to eat or drink. I was finally outta there one week later feeling a bit better. I'm now feeling better able to get my fluids and Protein just enough to not be dehydrated and to keep my body from going into starvation mode. To be honest with you i hated that i did this to myself and woulda taken it all back plus 15 lbs just to have my old life back, but day by day besides the timing of my meals and drinking fluids, heart burn and acid reflex its getting better and better and i feel a change in my body and heart on my decision, down 31 lbs. And three pants sizes im finallyable to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
