Thinking of starting my pre-op diet early.

Recommended Posts

So, I'm thinking of starting my pre-op diet early. My surgery is scheduled for October 8 and I want to get my body used to the changes that are coming. Does anyone have an opinion one way or another on this?

I think ur crazy to put urself thru this early. I only had a 24 hr liquid diet pre op and that was enuf for me. Afterwards I was on liquids for 4 weeks. Can't imagine going 1 more day if I didn't have to.

The post op diet is strict enuf. Ur gunna get sick of liquids really quick.

My pre-op diet is 10 days and consists of a Protein Shake for Breakfast, lean cousins for lunch and dinner, and 4oz fruit 8oz vegetable thought the day for Snacks. My liquid diet won't start until post op.

You can always start eating sensibly before your diet, but I do not know if I would be so restrictive at first. How about trying that but adding an additional salad and an additional fruit serving in between?

My surgeon requires a 2 week pre op diet consisting only of Liquid Protein. I've been thinking of starting it early as well...but once I get my surgery date, I will decide.

Very curious to hear more from some that are post op.

I started eating the "post op bariatric diet" back on August 1st. Basically I eat lots of Protein and low calorie, fat and carbs. Since I started I have lost 16lbs with just changing my diet. It is helping me get in the mind set of how I will eat after. Since this is forever, I want to get in the groove now. My thought process was it will help me succeed later if I get used to it now. (which the psychiatrist agreed with) And I have started getting used to it. I do have times where it is hard, as everyone does eventually. But overall it hasn't been as bad as I had once imagined.

I had complications with Vitamin K because i was on the diet for longer than expected. It helps your blood clot and is found in veggies.

I was on the pre op diet 10 days, then was told to stop because the surgeon had a family emergency. I had food for a week, then went back to the diet for another 2.

I had to be put on plasma before the surgery...aaaand i broke out into hives. So the surgery was delayed 2 days. They also wouldn't let me leave the hospital without an IV of Vitamin k in me.

I suggest just following it to a T, lol.

I went the sensible diet route for months before the pre-op liquid fast. It helped me.

I started the high Protein, low carb diet my surgeon wants during the 3-month supervised weight loss the day I saw him for my first consult. At the suggestion of my nutritionist I did do a one-week trial of the pre-surgery Clear Liquids & Protein Shakes. That was very helpful in finding how my diabetes would handle it. My surgeon said the high protein, low carb diet would help my body learn to use different fuel. I lost a total of 44 pounds in the 4 months prior to surgery.
