Empty stomach test

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had to for for an empty stomach test? I was just told that my gastro doctor wants me to have this test before he will clear me for surgery. My endoscopy came back fine, so not sure why I need this as well. They said it could take up to 6 hours!

Sounds fun... Did that say why? Are they testing how fast it empties?

I have to go there in the eat eggs injected with dye (yum) and then they take xrays every 15 minutes to see how long the food takes to go from my stomach to the small intestine. I guess some people this can take a while and have some reflux from the intestine?

Ok yes then they are testing for Gastroparesis

It's funny I've not heard of anyone testing before..

I wonder if the doc saw something when scoping that made him think you might have it?

I've read here that some people have had problems and found out after surgery they have it.

But on the flip side I've also read that some think getting the sleeve can help people with it...

I am assuming he did see something even though he said everything he saw was fine during the scope. If there is something that could be wrong, rather find out now.

He might just be being very thorough...

Good luck with your test. And boy, at least they could give you something good to eat like cake!!

That has eggs :P

Did he have the sleeve? Just curious if I did have that if it would delay my surgery.

No he only has the egg tests when he has severe spasms and attacks from his gastroparesis/diabetes and ends up in the hospital. His system is shutting down and he can't keep food in/digest it. But many doctors find RNY to be the "cure" for gastroparesis because of the rerouting of your intestines.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
