Chewing problem

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am trying so hard to chew my food between 28-40 times, but it seems impossible. Every time I start chewing that much, it seems like the food just slides down my throat before I'm done. Am I doing it wrong?

I feel so silly asking, but I don't want to get food stuck.

I'm with you Maurdan. I can't chew that many times either, no matter how much I try. I mean really now, how many times can you chew a spoonful of scrambled eggs? I've learned not to stress over it. You can only do the best you can do. Certain foods will require a lot of chewing and others won't. Keep up the good work!

:wave:Hi everyone! My nutritionist told me that if the food is sliding down, then it's chewed enough...I asked my MD and he also said that people chew differently..it might take me 25 chews and it might take someone else 40...so, I think it is a personal "chew"...

I have never chewed my food that many times, and I have never had a problem--no PB'ing, no throwing up, nothing getting stuck--but maybe I am just one of the lucky ones! Better to be safe than sorry I guess until you know how you will handle it!

Maurdan,

You are so funny! YOU almost made me swallow my food without chewing enough. I tend to be obsessive, so I chew between 15-20 times and that seems to suffice. To answer your question, I think the whole point of giving bandsters a number is to remind us that the food has to be chewed to a fine consistency so as not to stuck. Obese people like us got obese in the first place, (especially me), because we "wolf" down our food, mindlessly. So, whether you chew 15-20-40, if the food is sliding down your throat you're acheiving the right consistency and you should be fine. By the way, I was banded right before you by Dr. Rumbaut, and will be seeing him and Elsa, (the nutritionist), on Monday. But you know you can always email her if you have concerns. She responds promptly.

Are you going for a fill? I wish I could go back for my first fill, but I just can't afford it (plane fare, hotel, and days off work). :(

Let me know how it goes!

Yeah, I will be going back to Dr Rumbaut for all of my fills. I'll let you know when I get back on Tuesday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
