Surgery tomorrow! Still wondering if I could do this myself!

Recommended Posts

Thank you again everyone!! Well day 2, Dr. wanted me to stay in the hospital one more night, only so I can walk around more and they wanted to make sure I could tolerate liquids before I go home, so I won't get dehydrated. Drinking 60ml Water, lemonade, Jello every hour, going down fine:) Walked some more and took a shower:) Ahhhhhhh, that felt good:) Still sore in the one spot, but not bad at all. Off PCA and on liquid pain meds. Hubby stayed with me all night:) and all day today:) I am very grateful all went well and for all of your kind comments. I wish you all the best as well!!

Thank you!! Day 3: Going home today! Glad I got to stay an extra day though. Just the peace of mind of being monitored was nice. Still some pain in the one area, but able to walk, drink fluids without a problem. Had some gas yesterday. Wasn't really painful, just uncomfortable. I have never been so happy to pass gas Haha:) It's a big difference when the pain meds wear out, suggest taking them before feeling pain, but even without them it's tolerable, but not fun. If anyone ever has any questions please feel free to ask. This forum has helped me so much, I hope I can help others:) Will update soon:)

This topic has been the most valuable to me thus far. The threads that prepare you with food, habits, what to expect after are all at our finger tips and are so helpful.

But, this thread of people that are nervous, wondering if this choice is the right one, thinking if they could still try something else was most valuable at this time.

Then I read.. Belize's post and was inspired. This post validated my decision to do surgery. I really appreciate your heartfelt response that most of us can relate to.. It put any reservations that I have at ease. Looking to be sleeved at the end of year.

Thank you!!

I am going home today as well. I had a lot of issues yesterday with pain while trying to get fluids down. It was due to swelling so once they gave me some steroids it helped me get the fluids down without pain. Tons of gas pain so I'm walking as much as possible to work it out

Oops I was also worried and sad that it had truly come to surgery and removing a perfectly healthy stomach for me to lose weight. I made a list of all of the ways my weight was limiting my life ( breathing, embarrassed, no clothes .. Etc). There was no other way out of my hell ( in my opinion on a permanent basis) for me. The first few days after surgery were tough and painful but I feel like a new person now ( I'm 6 wks post op and -31lbs) with real hope for the first time in years!! Best thing I've ever done for me! Ps . I'm not mourning food - not very hungry and I can eat what I want . If I'm dying for a bite of cheesecake I have it - not a big deal anymore and I don't feel the need to finish it or stuff myself. I feel in control. Good luck

I am going home today too. Yay! And I agree about pain. It is better to stay on top of it than to try to fix it afterwards. Pain meds are good! Excited to hard home- a little nervous but ready to move forward!

Yayyy!! a few of us heading home today! Boogiebabe, yes I do have some rumbly in my tummy, but they said that's a good sign, shows everything is working in there:) Well, I am home. Was very sleepy, so took a nice long nap. Pretty weak, even picking up the mail felt kind of heavy haha:) But I know I'll get stronger each day. Liquids are still going done fine. Had a couple of sugar free icepops, very yummy! :) Not hungry at all which is exciting. Family eating in front of me doesn't bother me at all:) My 10 year old son greeted me in the driveway and said, Mommy, I made your bed for you. That touched my heart:) So Congratulations to all of you who just had surgery, and to those getting it soon. It is no where near as bad as I thought it would be so far. Best wishes to you all and thanks again for being there! :)

So' date=' I waited a long time for this day to come. Tomorrow is surgery day. I was super excited for a while, now I'm still somewhat excited, but also bummed because I feel like there is still a chance I could do this myself. I am mourning food already. I know I will follow everything to a tee as I have these past two weeks on pre-op diet, but still nervous I won't lose the weight. I'm nervous about long term effects since this surgery is so new. I have tried so many times to do this myself like most others on here, and couldn't. So nervous that if I didn't go through with it, I would be miserable and regret not doing it. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and was just diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I think of my perfectly good stomach, and wonder if cutting it out is the right thing to do. Has anyone else felt this way? :([/quote']

We like to know how u r doing.. keep us posted please. Wishing u a speedy recovery.

I am so happy to hear you are doing so well! Thank you for sharing! My surgery is scheduled for the 16th! I am on vacation with my family and this pre-op diet sucks! What sucks even more is not knowing if my insurance has approved my surgery yet. The last I heard was that they should have an answer by Monday. I am nervous and excited. My husband is the only one who knows I am having this surgery. It sucks not having the support I need from my family. I come on this site and read the threads looking for someone to relate to. I have my husband to talk to, but it's not the same. Thanks again for sharing your story. You give me hope and peace that everything will be just fine :)

Thank you again everyone for the encouragement and well wishes:) Shumaked I hope you get approved! My husband is also supportive, but I know exactly what you mean. We all can relate to each other, since we are going through the same thing:) I don't want this to be boring, but, nothing too eventful here; which is a good thing:) Only had one dose of pain meds today, will probably take one more at bedtime and anticipate I won't take any tomorrow, we'll see:) Sites healing well, they were glued, by the way. Have a small bruise from a heparin shot. Had my first Protein Shakes today. They still tasted good, so I was happy about that. And definitely filled me up more than the Water, icepops, etc. Not craving food at all. I'm already noticing how much my husband eats. It seems like he eats every hour haha:) He is not overweight though. Also noticing that he comments on every food commercial that comes on, mmmmm that looks good, I want that. I asked him to work on not doing that in front of me, and he is. It doesn't bother me right now, but in the future it may, so he might as well practice now:) I am still weak, taking lots of naps, but also have the urge to walk, so I have been walking just around my yard with my hubby and kids, whoever is willing to go with me:) I am really glad I did this so far. Even in the recovery room, I had this kind of worried feeling but, I had this happy, peaceful feeling in there somewhere. I now have that happy feeling just waiting to come out. Guess I want to see if it works first:) So, again, I wish you all the best. It is a scary thing getting major surgery, but according to the majority on here it is so worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
