Quenching My Thirst

Recommended Posts

My surgery is in 2 days, September 4th. My biggest fear is feeling thirsty and not being able to drink a lot. I can easily down 16oz. after working out and obviously won't be able to do that anymore. Anyone have any issues with this or advice?

It's just learning a new way to swallow. I cannot chug a lug like I used to, it's just a tad paced. After the first couple weeks, it went down easier and now I don't notice it at all (3 1/2 mo out). It also was one of my biggest concerns prior to surgery. A non event for me.

Hopefully you won't be thirsty. You'll feel like you're floating with all the Fluid you'll be consuming!

I felt like I would die of thirst the first month after surgery. It was hot and I was used to downing a LOT of Water. I had to swish mouthfuls of cold Water and spit them out and then sip tiny little sips slowly. I was never satisfied. Several times I took a big swig of water when I was out and couldnt tactfully spit it out and had to swallow just a bit at a time so that my swig became at least 4 swallows.

I'm not reassuring you am I?

After a month or two I got used to drinking less but I still dont feel like I can drink enough at 3 months out.

I was the same way. Constantly have a water bottle by your side. I was worried about this too but having a large Water bottle really helped. Every 15 try and drink 1/2 oz - 1 oz. I marked my bottle with a Sharpie to remind me how much I should drink. I've noticed I can drink a little more without much resistance (I'm just about 4 weeks out). Feel it out and best of luck to you!

It's still nice to know I'm not alone with my fear :)

I always pay for it when I chug my Water. It makes me severely nauseous. I miss drinking a cold glass of water all at once after coming in from the heat and humidity. :(

That's exactly what I'm fearful of. I'm so glad that I asked about this, I thought that I was just being silly.

I can drink a pretty good amount at a time. Since about 2-3 weeks out I can drink a 32oz Powerade zero in about an hour.. My dr said I am lucky though. I can drink my 11oz Protein Drink in less than half an hour... Nothing hurts.. I can take several sips in a minute too..

I could barely drink Water until my 10th week. Now all I want is Water, I cant stand the Powerade zero and G2 and other stuff I had to drink for 10 weeks.

Today I was happy to drink 8 oz of water in about 10 minutes. That was a BIG improvement for me. I can drink water with lemon a little faster.

I still don't think I drink 64 oz a day but because I keep adding ice I'm not really sure how much I drink.

I was able to drink fairly easily, although early out Popsicles helped me get my Water in without feeling like I was drowning. I could not drink plain Water until about 10 weeks, although I could drink it with lemon or lime in it at about 4 weeks. I am now 14 weeks and can drink just like I did preop, other then I get "full" on liquids quickly could do 16oz bottle in 15 min if I was really thirsty, but get a full feeling afterwards. Just play around and figure out what works for you and realize that because today you can't drink water, doesn't mean tomorrow wont be different!!

See you on the losers bench soon! :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
