....I have finished all my pre-op requirements except that my doctor wants me to lose 50 lbs pre-op! Just feels overwhelming. :(

I think I'd find another doctor. If one could lose 50lbs before surgery, why have the surgery at all?

My doctor wants me lose weight also, so far I have lost 31 pounds, but he did not give me certain amount to lose, going by my stomach thickness and wants me to cut out carbs. You can do it.

I only had to lose 10 pounds pre-op. My husband had to lose 30. It might be based on how much weight you have to lose overall. I know the pre-op weight loss is important, but it seems like an impossible task. Have you started a liquid diet yet? My husband actually gained weight before he started his liquid diet (2 weeks before surgery). He lost his 30 pounds in 2 weeks. I only had one week of liquid diet. My friend's husband had 3 weeks of liquid diet. I don't know how much he had to lose as this was before I knew them. It's hard, but it's so worth it. My husband is down 200 pounds in 16 months. I'm 5 weeks out, and have lost 51 pounds. Good luck!

from what my doctor said part is where you are carrying your weight, if the surgery can be done safely and also to see if we can handle the change.

I agree this is a bit cray and good. Loosing 50 pounds is a lot of weight and you will have to be really motivated to do this before your surgery date.

My doctor wanted me to lose 10% of my weight before surgery. That would be 30 pounds & I actually lost 44 pounds before surgery. My problem is that I've only lost 3.8 pounds since surgery!

you will lose weight, your body is still healing and recovering. give it time and follow your doctors instructions and you'll lose.

The funny thing is that my doctor does not require a liquid diet pre-op. I know that the 50 lbs he wants me to lose is based on my extremely high BMI. I understand it is in my best interest.....just very difficult.

my first doctor wanted me to lose at minimum of 70 before he would consider doing the surgery, but I decided to switch to a closer doctor because I did not like that I live in Springfield mo and he was is St Louis mo, plus I just wasn't comfortable with him for lack of a better word. he was rather cold.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
