help! Sublingual B12 disgusting! Only cherry flavor?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery 2 days from now and im very nervous about my required vitamins! I'm a super picky eater and am trying my Vitamins before surgery. The b12s I have tried are awful!- vomit awful! I tried the liquid and tablet form you put under your tongue and can't stomach it.. My nut let me know if I took the bariatric multi Vitamin I wouldn't have to take additional B12 but I don't know if I could even stomach the Bariatric Advantage multis. I love my multi Vitamin gummys and my dr is okay with me taking them.. I can't stomach anything chewable other then gummys.. No chalky gritty vitamins!

I know I should just get over the bad taste but I can't, I will get nauseous and vomit! Any b12 ideas! I need something other then cherry flavor!

I took the same b-12 I always took. I was told in the hospital anything the size of a pencil eraser or an m&m was fine. I did break them in half the first few days I took them, but I have no problem taking them whole now.

Same here. I take all of my same medications. It is another one of those funny things that I just shake my head at with all the different rules with different surgeons. I know there is always good reasons but it is funny. My surgeon even allows me to take my extended release anti depressant.... GASP!!! I know!!! I should note, that with the period of time I have been on this antidepressant, that if it weren't absorbing properly I would DEFINITELY know!!!

I use the GNC brand of sub-lingual B-12 but I just let it dissolve in my mouth because sticking it under my tongue hurt. I am 3 months post surgery and had all my blood work come back great. The GNC is a cherry flavor but isn't too strong and I don't mind sucking on it for a minute or so until it is gone.

You might want to ask your PCP or surgeon for a prescription for Nascobal, which is a B12 supplement and comes in either nasal spray or nasal gel. It is supposed to work better than the sublingual tablets and one of its recommended uses is for people who have had VSG. Depending on your insurance situation (drug co-pays etc.) it might even be cheaper to get a prescription than to buy B12 OTC.

Thanks guys! I can't stomach the GNC tablet under the tongue..it's too chalky. And cherry!

Are y'all saying y'all just did the regular swallow b12s? I might try that in a couple weeks if my dr is okay with it but definitely will ask for the prescription! Thanks!!!

I use Twin Labs brand from the Vitamin Shoppe. It's also sublingual but I end up chewing it after 10 minutes and it's not dissolved at all. not sure if it doesn't work right or what...doesn't taste too bad. Not as bad a my multivitamin...

Vitamins are tough, especially right after surgery. Consider a b-12 shot. They are monthly.

I'm pre-op but started to use this one already:

Jarrow Formulas Methyl B12

http://www.amazon.co...uct/B0013OQGO6/

You can either suck it or chew it, it's not that sweet and has a flavor like a mild Sweet-Tart. It's cherry but not a disgusting cherry like the one sublingual I tried already.

It's a good high dose of B12 (methyl B12 is better).

It's the only place I know. They have a great Calcium chew also. It's caramel flavored. It's like a Kraft caramel and is my nightly treat.

My doctor wrote a prescription for Nascobal, but my prescription plan didn't cover it even with a prescription because it is a Vitamin. Without insurance, it is very expensive. Like $300 or $400... I have taken the sublingual B-12 from Trader Joes and also the cherry flavored one from Bariatric Advantage. The one from Bariatric Advantage tastes better, in my opinion, but takes forever to dissolve. The one from Trader Joes dissolves almost instantly. If you watch for them, you can also get deals on the B-12 injections on Groupon, Living Social, etc. Hope that helps. :-)

Mmm yes those calcium chews are delicious.

For the B12, my mom had the sleeve and she gets a B12 shot once a month. I use the NOW B12, kind of orange-flavored, very tiny and I don't notice any chalkiness.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
