Nothing tastes different.

Recommended Posts

So I've heard that your taste buds change and things you liked before you might not like anymore. I still like everything. Haven't came across anything yet that tastes different. I feel like I'm able to stomach things that I probably shouldn't right now (of course its in smaller amounts) I knew I had an Iron stomach before but man I really was hoping that would've changed. should I be worried?

My tastes have not changed either. I still crave salt sweets and carbs. I can't eat them as my diet has not advanced past pureed. It is something I am very concerned about too!!!

Mine never did either. BUT I have done every very low calorie, carb restricted diet on the planet before starting so my body jumps into ketosis within a day and I don't have the nasty taste buds that go with it. So I think maybe people who have experienced that change either have never been in ketosis and its a reaction to that or they just have a different experience. For me, there hasn't been anything that has tasted significantly different other than most "sweets" are now disgustingly sweet but I was never a big sugar fan to begin with.

ETA: Make sure you follow your doctor's plan regardless of how things taste.

My taste "buds" never changed, but some things don't sit will and are not as satisfying as they used to be, so I'd say my "taste" has changed.

My tastes didn't change...everything I liked before is still good. Fortunately, my cravings for food have been quelled, and if I decide to indulge in a treat, a bite truly suffices.

I could kill off a bag of chips in a day. Now I measure out 1 ounce and eat about half of it before I'm like "meh, I've had enough." It's strange how once the cravings and urges go away food becomes just food.

I'm almost 7 weeks out & so far, whatever I've eaten, has been tasted the same. Altho, today we went to a furniture store VIP event (only because I went there once last month looking for furniture ~ go figure) & they had a huge tray of Cookies & coffee. So I grabbed a cookie without even thinking & my husband asked me "are you going to eat that?" I was shocked to see the cookie in my hand! LOL! Anyway, I told him that I got it for him but just wanted a bite! I took a bite & it was disgustingly sweet! I went back & got some coffee just to wash my mouth out of the taste of that cookie! YUCKO! I will probably NEVER eat another cookie again after that experience! BTW, that was my first 2 sips of real coffee I've had since before my pre-op diet. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much because I kept tasting that cookie bite! That'll teach me!

Nothing has changed in taste for me but last night I was cutting kangaroo steaks into stir fry strips and found myself positively wretching - Roo is like game/venison - v dark red, quite strong in flavour and fantastically lean - and usually I love it. I had to make a Soup for myself - just couldn't bear the thought of eating it. If only this would happen with cheese, cream, cake or grapes... the things I crave.

My taste has changed quite a bit! I drank Crystal light all the time pre-surgery and cant stand it now. Tried coffee and ick. All this sweet stuff is about to gag me, it is even sweeter now and I have a sweet tooth!

No, kangaroo doesn't taste like chicken... crocodile tastes like chicken! But you can't buy croc in the supermarket, and Roo is widely available. Sadly is most often used for pet meat, but you can buy roasts, mince, sausages and steaks for humans too... it's a beautiful meat, incredibly lean and tastes like venison (deer), in my experience. In our Water deprived country it makes so much sense to eat more of it, as kangaroos require very little Water while cows require heaps.

But we remain a beef and chicken loving country... amongst our friends few people ever eat it. Like venison, for many its a bit like eating Bambi. Except there are soooo many roos... I read recently they are the largest "herd" in the world, at 53 million. There are only 20 million people in Australia! We're a big country (many Americans don't realise our land mass is as big as mainland USA), but we nearly all live within 100 km of the East Coast. Just a whacking great desert - with loads of roos - over most of the country.

There you go, a nice little Geography lesson for today. Now, I'd love to hear about where you live...

So true!! I am dying for coffee and when I have a sip of Decaf it tastes horrible..lol. Chrystal Light tastes nasty, too! As a matter if fact, I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners anymore.

My tastes have changed but I didn't discover it until I was much farther out than you are because that's when I could eat any kind of food. I have discovered I no longer really like glaze donuts or Twix candy. I lost Twix candy! Oh I know, I know, it's a real blessing not to like these things anymore. But still...Twix.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
