When does sipping get easier?

Recommended Posts

When does sipping get easier?? I am about 72 hours out from surgery and in still having a ton of trouble sipping! I'm trying to shove as many liquids down my throat as I can but then my tummy gets angry! Im not calculating how many ounces im getting per day yet but im going go guess about 25-40 oz is all im managing. I've heard that it does get better. How long did it take to get easier for you? As a former gulper this is a big issue for me!!

25-40 is great! Try different temperatures of Water, adding flavor drops, even diluting Gatorade. At three and a half months, I still struggle with plain Water some days. It just feels too (for lack of a better description) hard. You can count Popsicles and your Protein drinks as your liquid for now, too.

I was a gulper, too. It's my biggest challenge because when I gulp from habit, it hurts. It is better each week and I can see the end of the tunnel. I can actually get 4-6 ounces down in one sitting now, so that's a huge plus for me!

Sipping was so hard for me at first. I'm 4-1/2 months out and still can't take a lot of Water in at one time. I really miss gulping water! I think I was about 3-4 weeks out when it got better.

I still can't gulp like I used to. But I'd say for ME, it was close to two weeks before I wasn't sipping. (But that could have just been my fear of drinking too much at once.) ;)

A suggestion? I had surgery on 8/19. Journal what you're consuming. I set out 4 bottles of Water and then I have a visual of what my goal is. Once I return to work I'll have a goal of 24 oz between 8-noon and another 24 from 1:30-5:00 :). And then whatever I get in during the evening is gravy!

Of course Popsicles, flavored zero calorie drinks count too.

You might be surprised after tracking that you're worried for no reason?

I'm a gulper. I'm one month out today, and I use a "sippy cup" most of the time. Protein Shakes I can drink in a regular cup because they're thicker. I can't handle more then about 1 1/2 teaspoons at a time without feeling it when I swallow.

They told me to do the same thing

I've been thinking about getting a sippy cup so that I can't accidentally gulp. That's happened a few times and that is one of the worst feelings in the world! Has anyone else used a sippy cup?

Everyday is better for me. I am pretty much golden with Water. I don't push it but I can easily take 1-2 oz without much thought. shakes etc... is more like 1/4 of an ounce. I aim for 8 oz of water an hour. Leave myself 20 minutes out of the hour for whatever Protein. So 10 min before and 10 min after and the other 40 I focus on my water. Yesterday at 6 days post op I hit 64oz, today I struggled and hit 44.... It was all in timing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
