My doc refered me to a Nutritionist now what?

Recommended Posts

:help: Hi all! I am hoping that I will beable to get a band soon. My primary doctor said because my insurance is Healthnet I have to go threw a nutritionis program, rehab doc and a psyc test first. So now I am waiting for the nutritionist to contact me. Per my doc he says that I have to do this program with the nutritionist first for 6 months. Now should I lose weight on this nutrition program?:hungry: If I lose weight will they not refer me to get the lap band? Should I try to gain weight? Should I not? Does anyone know how this works??

My surgeon set me up with all the doctors I needed to see including the nutritionist. I only had to have 1 appt with her. The questions you ask are very good ones. Maybe you can pose them to your surgeon. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I had to been seen by a psyc for probably 6 months he allowed I had a Binge Eating problem (Well duh thats what I am fat) he allowed that if I had a Binge Eating problem the Band wouldn't work for me. (Which isn't so) I told him the things that he wanted to hear and wahla I have the Band. I still see my nutritionist she is great, I wouldn't know what to do without her. We keep in contact on a weekly basis.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
