Eating like I am going to the chair

Recommended Posts

My PreOp diet starts Tuesday. I know this is wrong but I am eating like crazy. Like I will never be able to eat again. This is so my old pattern I was kind of hoping that realizing I was heavy enough to need surgery I wouldn't react like this. Is everyone else being good before their preOp diet?

I had pizza today. However I didn't eat so much that I don't feel good but I'm terrified of gaining what I lost back. But I have until the 9th to be better.

I actually haven't but I was thinking about going to PF Changs for my favorite cocktail a few days before I actually have to start my preop diet. I have some weeks to go but I started replacing Breakfast with a Protein drink and some days I've done it for dinner too- but I did notice headaches. I'm glad I'm doing it this way so I won't feel like it's so drastic.

You'll read a lot of opinions/experiences on the topic of food funerals both pro and con. As you head into your pre-op here is a great read on a positive way to look at your time leading up to surgery.

Best of luck on your pre-op, surgery and recovery!!

You know the food funeral thing is a tough one..

When I knew I had a date I went to the store before my pre op and picked up a pint of some kind of ice cream (can't even remember the flavor how sad) went home and ate half of it that night and finished it the next day..

After I ate it?? Nothing, it was just gone it didn't feel special it didn't make me feel better, in fact it did nothing for me except make me feel crappier about myself and add more weight to lose!

Fast forward to today, I can eat normal again so if I wanted a bit of ice cream I could. So I guess what I'm saying is don't sabotage yourself with thoughts of "I need to eat this now because I can never have it again"

I ate like a pig for at least a month before my surgery. Lots of people will tell you that food Funerals are a bad thing. Personally now at 15 months post op I can't see where it harmed me at all. I think I'm doing well.

I started bingeing soon after I scheduled my surgery. My Dr. only required me to do a one week liquid diet, but just to stop the crazy eating, I decided to start my liquid diet a week early, so I did 2 weeks instead of one. It was the best decision I could have made. Quitting "food" cold turkey, was easier then trying to control my bingeing. It worked, I lost 9.8 pounds in those 2 weeks on liquids. Had I not done it, I probably would have gained an additional 7-10 pounds.

You are definitely not alone in this struggle. Last night I had a couple of drinks - used up that last chilled bottle of champagne (no more carbonation for me!). Oddly, the drinks weren't that good (I pretty much stopped drinking a month ago so this was a true last blast). I just wanted to have a "mimosa funeral" since Monday I'm starting my own version of a 2 week pre-op diet and alcohol can be a real no no after surgery. Hang in there!

No more mimosas? What's a girl to do? One of my fav wines is slightly carbonated. I will have to join the binge brigade and have a nice barbecue meal as well.

One thing I know I will miss though and it might sound crazy, but I love taking a nice cold bottle of Water and just drinking it down. I already decided that will be the last thing I do before I go NPO the night before surgery.

I do c the benefit of putting yourself on a diet b4 hand because you will be in a panic eating up everything in site b4 surgery. I got my approval just waiting to see the doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
