My body is PO'ed

Recommended Posts

So, I'm planning on having my surgery in Oct. and I decided I would start now on giving up the carbs. Well let me just tell you my body is in carb detox. Feeling weak and tired despite the fact that I have been getting a minimum 60 grams of Protein daily. The carb cravings are hitting full force and cannot believe that this is a head hunger sort of thing. I will however continue to push forward, AIN'T NO SUGAR GONNA RUN MY LIFE!

Good thinking. I had that same detox myself before my pre-op diet (and multiple times before that with failed diet attempts) and they are never fun. It's amazing how addicted our bodies and mind get when it comes to food. What's worse is I did a "Oh lets binge on all my favorite foods for four days straight before pre-Op!" That was awful and definitely made it harder for me. It will pass though and just think of the new, happier you. :)

Also - since you haven't started your liquid diet yet you can make your transition easier with low carb "favorites." Like pizza crust made out of chicken instead of bread or cauliflower potatoes. This site has great recipes that might help you if you feel like giving up: http://yourlighterside.com/

Yeah, it can be hard. The headaches I got the second or third day after giving up carbs were unbearable! Pretty good idea to try to ween yourself off of them ahead of time. Don't make yourself miserable longer than you have to though. You really won't crave them the same after surgery, so it is actually a lot easier then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
