jenlen 58 Posted August 31, 2013 Anyone have a reasonable explanation why we are not to drink from straws? I love my iced tea with lots of ice and am so tired of having ice crash down on my nose when I drink. Initially when I asked my NUT she stated it was to keep us from swallowing air. Well I experimented and took a sip from a straw. The tea sat in my mouth just as it does when drinking from a glass and I swallowed without taking in air. Just does not add up to me. Sometimes I think they just make crap up to see if we are capable of following the rules. Anyone have a better explanation?

Yikes Well, if it made more sense than swallowing air, then I wish you could jog your memory . Otherwise I am feeling super tempted to have my iced tea in luxury. SuzyB 182 Posted August 31, 2013 I am laughing because the Unjury ad next to this post, has a Protein Shake in it with a straw. 3 ArnoldS, jenlen and Molly3 reacted to this

vsginkc 117 Posted August 31, 2013 My doctor said that if I drink from a straw and it doesn't bother me, go for it. And I do 1 jenlen reacted to this
nyorker 67 Posted August 31, 2013 Im 10 days post op and i can gulp Water like 3 quick drinks and have no problems..
jenlen 58 Posted August 31, 2013 I think I like your doctor. I can understand if when using a straw you just gulp it down quickly then it may be an issue. I have mastered the art of small, slow sips throughout the day and just can't see how the mechanics of using the straw to take small slow sips changes the act of swallowing in any way. Ty for the input.
MissErika 65 Posted August 31, 2013 Basically it allows excess air to get into your stomach and can give you gas. That is the only reason that I have heard and got from my research. It may not hit you instantly but rather later in the day. I am not advising you to drink it with a straw but if you talk to your surgeon at your next post OP appointment and you have no problems from it at all then maybe it just doesn't affect you like it can with others. I have seen some people on this site (and others) over the last few months from random browsing that always got major gas right before bedtime and traced it to using a straw. But we all tolerate things differently. 1 jenlen reacted to this

If I do decide to give it a careful try I will make sure to look out for that. Ty
Batman 31 Posted August 31, 2013 My surgeons office is also not anti straw and said it is fine to use one if I prefer. 1 jenlen reacted to this
crickee 85 Posted September 1, 2013 My hospital gave me a straw right after surgery. I actually don't take in as much air with a straw as I do without. I can tolerate Water much better with a straw. I am 9 months out and water is still an issue, especially first thing in the morning. I use a straw every day in my Tervis cup with no problems. 1 jenlen reacted to this
srs82781 83 Posted September 1, 2013 After surgery I had such a hard time getting in all my liquids that I started using a straw and doubled my intake. That's the only way I can drink! I am 6mos out and haven't had a problem at all with the straw, I actually found I took more air trying to drink straight out of a glass that had ice in it trying to avoid the ice. 2 jenlen and Molly3 reacted to this
