Pre-op verse Post-op protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Quick question. My doc has me doing a two week pre-op diet that partly requires Protein Shakes. For those in a similar situation were you allowed to mix fruits and yogurts in your pre-op Protein shakes, or was that reserved for post-op? I am just a little confused.

It depends on the instructions your surgeon gave you. Originally, I was allowed 1 healthy meal (chicken, no skin and not cooked in butter, oil, etc with green veggies) and I was allowed 1 cup of fruit. The rest was shakes. Then they changed my plan to 100% shakes and nothing else because they moved my surgery up so I only had 1 week to shrink my liver. If you are allowed fruit then you should be allowed to mix it with your shakes but you must count it towards your daily limit. Yogurt - I doubt it but maybe unsweetened almond milk. Everybody has a different plan so just call the office and ask. :) But post OP you definitely won't be able to for a few weeks.

The instructions I was given from my doc weren't really clear. I was suppose to start my pre-op diet on Sunday. I will do it without until Tuesday when I can reach my doc offic.

I guess the part that confused me was they gave me a bunch of Protein Shake receipts with my diet plan. Uummm

If THEY gave you recipes then you are allowed to follow them and there is no problem there but if you are still unsure then just do the normal shakes and wait until Tuesday.

I'm allowed a small amt of fruit as a snack 2 times a day. I prefer the premise shakes so I don't add anything.

i'm on my pre-op now with 2-3 shakes a day to replace meals. i'm allowed one meal a day. but i always add SF Syrup to my shakes because i don't think they're sweet enough. she said that was okay, but no fruits or anything like that. hope that helps!

I'm on day 2 of 10 of mine. I'm allowed 4 shakes a day, no fun additives allowed, all clear and sugar free drinks in between, along with sf Popsicles and sf Jello. I'm so hungry!! But so far have rocked it. I feel like nemo and dori " just keep swimming, swimming, swimming" best wishes!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
