wildlyme 42 Posted August 31, 2013 I have a question. I take an anti depression pill. It sounds like I'll have to go a while without. What are your experiences?
marfar7 1,533 Posted August 31, 2013 The only pill I was told to stop pre op was my birth control pill a month before. To avoid blood clots. Everything else (including my Celexa, my antidepressant) I continued. I think drs want you to continue taking your normal meds, except for bcp's (if you take them). Just ask your team... Good luck with ur surgery!
Richard Foor 655 Posted August 31, 2013 Depending on how large the pill is, and weather it can be crushed this may not be the case. The best bet is to discuss it with the dr who prescribes the anti depression med and see what your options are. Also it should be noted that some people have no problems at all swallowing pills as soon as a couple days post op, I personally as well as many others I have read about where taking ppi's within a week postop, so as long as the med isn't going to effect the healing of your stomach lining you may not have to go very long until you can take it. Good Luck.
epc317 13 Posted August 31, 2013 I took my antidepressant (tablet) right up until the day before surgery, and was given it in the hospital. I had no issues.

Good Luck. Ok, I misunderstood. I thought she was asking what she needed pre op. I think that was from another post I read, actually. I stopped anything not necessary (like my Neurontin, for nerve pain. It's a horse sized pill) but continued my ppi, my pain pills (back injury), and bp pill. Oh and sleeping pill. Other pills I went about a month without and when I figured out I coudl take pills wiht no problems, I added back the other ones. Good luck!

stacechase 251 Posted August 31, 2013 I am also on meds (anti-anxiety) and I was allowed to take my pills! I bought a pill cutter from the drugstore. My doc said that as long as the pieces are about the size of a tic tac, you're good to go.
kpires5501 18 Posted August 31, 2013 So I can take my Zoloft and cut my trazodone pills in half I should be fine? Doc told me to crush them but they taste horrible crushed so I just stopped taking them until I get to stage 2 foods. I even have a hard time taking ppi crushed yuck
stacechase 251 Posted August 31, 2013 Well, everyone's doctor is different, but mine said that was fine (he never even mentioned crushing). They even have me cut up pain pills in the hospital because the liquid version made me dry heave.

raven123 97 Posted September 23, 2013 It's never a good idea to stop antidepressants and anxiety pills abruptly. It can really mess your mind up. I take Effexor and plan to open the capsules.
Tbird49 66 Posted September 24, 2013 Don't stop cold ... As long as its not a time released type of pill u can cut or crush .. Try to take with a warm drink like tea that relaxes your tummy ..
