I'd probably try to find a PCP who supports you & your plan. Very lucky my provider actually was the one that encouraged me to look into it more. She thought I'd be a great candidate. They are out there. Good luck.

Old fashioned way? Good idea since that's worked for so many people already! NOT

By all means seek out other opinions! I tried three years ago to have surgery and a psychologist pulled the plug. I had basically given up. When my insurance changed at the end of last year, I had to get a new primary physician and in fact that physician suggested the surgery.

You know I went to my pcp for a referal for a lap band ..his thin self said - no you have not dieted hard for a year...that same day we had a lunch at my job by a baratric / plastic suregon. I made an appointment with him that day. When I went through the process my gyno sent over my records and weight records. I went back to my PCP and told them I did it.. He said - well you sure are motivated. I thought you just wanted all that money for my blood work. I feel amazing and I am only 5 weeks out! What a jerk! Call your insurance you may not need a referal.

I suggest you either find a new PCP or show your current PCP the research sourced by this article I quoted in my blog:

My primary wasn't on board for me at first either. Luckily she still sent over all the required info and I was approved. The time I saw here after surgery, and at the time I was down 50 pounds in like two months and she was amazed and so happy for me. Your primary just might not know too much about it...

Is this your PCP?

Lol Gman that made my day!

OP -- run dont walk to a new PCP. If the surgeon feels you are a good candidate, then you are. Find a PCP who will support you.

Best of luck & keep us updated!

My PCP wasn't the most supportive either. He didn't outright say no but he kept delaying and finding reasons to hold off signing the clearance papers. Finally I told him he could either support my decision and sign it or I would need to find a different PCP who would be on board. I guess the thought of losing a patient wasn't too appealing because he signed it then and there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
