Usually head hunger is like a craving, thinking you want food but not real hunger. At 8 days out you are probably feeling the hunger sensation caused by excessive acid in your healing stomach. I had that really bad at first. Antacids helped and it did go away after several weeks.

Head hunger is a b@#$h and took me a few weeks to get it under control. I promise it does get better! Are you taking an acid reducer? If not, it can make you feel like you are really hungry and your not it is the acid. Hang in there!

About 4-5 days out I was dreaming of yummy food CONSTANTLY. It drove me nuts. I'm only about 4weeks out but now, I only think of food when I'm actually hungry. Nice change!

I dreamt about food for the first two weeks. I felt desperately hungry and repeatedly watched cooking shows. Once I got purees hunger totally ceased and so did the food obsession. Now its math all the time. Measuring and timing etc.

I have it really bad at night, I do not sleep all the way through the night and wake up and eat, I am afraid that after I have the surgery I will be the same

I very much doubt it. Most of us are struggling to eat what we have to eat to get the Protein in, at least initially. I understand that changes over time.

You know even know, if all you allowed yourself to eat nothing but meat, chicken and other Proteins, if you would still wake up hungry in the middle of the night? It's the carbs and sugar before surgery that cause sugar/insulin crashes and send us in search of more food, only to repeat the cycle.

If you're worried, I wonder if it would help to drastically reduce carbs now and increase your Protein intake, and see if it helps your hunger?

In my experience, head hunger starts to lessen a few weeks out when you can start having bits of (almost) normal food. My wife makes meals where I can eat something that everyone else is having. And when we go out, it's nice to be able to eat something at the restaurant. You are far more satisfied. We went to a buffet yesterday and while it was a waste of money, it was nice that I could have some variety. I was satisfied for the rest of the day just from going to a normal brunch. It's amazing how satisfied you can feel with the sleeve. I used to worry that not being able to eat a whole plate of food would bother me- like I would be missing something. But it isn't that way at all.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
