Do you think I would qualify?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Thanks for your opinions. From the research i've done online it looks like I might not qualify, but do have some health issues that might put me 'over the top'. Just wondering if any of you were considered 'marginal' cases?

I've got a BMI of 33, but a history of being overweight for most of my life. Have lost weight several times, always gaining it back. I've tried it all....Slimfast, pills, WW, Atkins, supplements, health clubs, etc. I'm presently at an all-time high weight of 210 (5'7"). I'm insulin resistant, hypoglycemic, have back pain, hip pain, suspect I have sleep apnea and my cholesterol is borderline high. I am heading down a classic path of failing health at 48 years of age. I'd really really really like to get a band. Do you think I could get qualified?

Thanks,

TD

Most insurance companies require you to have a BMI of at least 35, even if you have co-morbidities. Still, it all depends on your past health and your insurance company.

I can self pay here in the States... if insurance doesn't pay, then I'll pay with cash. That's not an issue.

Call your ins. co and ask them what their criteria is to be considered for the lap band surgery. Mine was that I had to be considered morbidly obese and then that broke down to 100# overweight regardless of co morbibities. Every ins.co is different from what I understand.

As a second thought you could always go to Mexico

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
