Liquids with food

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else having a hard time not drinking with meals? I start my pre-op diet in a week and this is the only thing that I am having problems with so far. Breads and sodas haven't been a problem so far, but not having Water with lunch is incredibly hard to get past for some reason.

You're not the only one. This part is REALLY hard for me too. I think it's just another thing that has to be adapted to, but it's very hard. Good luck!

What kind of pre-op diet do they have you on?

This does take a bit to get used to. While this video is by bypass folks, it is relevant to us sleevers as well and always deserves a re-post.

Drink a glass of Water 45 min. before your meal....And then when you eat it won't be so bad...I drink water 30 min. After I eat...I still find it hard sometimes but you will adjust...I promise!!!!!!!

I had back surgery about 9 months ago, so I haven't been able to run and exercise like I used to, but, when I was exercising like crazy and running 30 miles a week, I couldn't get enough calories to feed all of my activity. To help me re-fuel my body before a race, I needed more calories. To do this, I would drink with my meals and, just like the video shows, I could eat double the amount. I could actually feel my stomach emptying.

Since I do not need the calories now, I do not drink with my meals and at over 2 years out, I quickly feel the restriction. It is one of the ways I maintain being at goal weight. I think some of the people who struggle with getting to goal or staying at goal have difficulty with not drinking with meals. We are just so used to it. It is one of the things that allowed us to gorge ourselves, but we have to change our old habits. Like the old saying goes, things only change when you make a change.

Post op? I absolutely can't drink while eating, nor can I drink until at least 30 minutes after eating. Restriction does that to a person :)

When I was preop I thought it was almost impossible for me not to drink while eating. Now that I'm post op it's so much easier than I ever thought. Once you start eating slower I think you naturally produce more saliva which makes it easier to not drink while eating because for me I don't feel like I have to "wash it down"

I'm a band to sleeve revision so used to not drinking with meals. however, I COULDN"T physically drink with my band (even tho the thought is the same with the band. They say you wash food thru ur stomach faster with liquids) because the band made the food stick in my esophagus and it was like a cork. Anytime I'd drink with meals I ended up vomiting all the liquid back up.

So after getting sleeved, I didn't understand why scientifically I couldn't drink with eating. With the band, there was something actually stopping my liquid from going down but there isn't with the sleeve. So, I gave it a try last week (I'm 7 weeks out). Drank about 4 gulps after eating. It was all I could do to keep from vomiting. I didn't because I'm terrified of a leak happening cuz of my vomiting, but I had to fight it for about 10 minutes. Not sure why I CAN'T drink with meals (other than the whole 'you'll-wash-the-food-thru-faster thing) since there's nothing preventing it from going thru, but I can't. The sleeve must be magic or something.

So it's no drinking for me for about 20-30 minutes ( I can feel when the food is down enuf where I can drink. Learned to tell with my band)

Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
