megandearcos 0 Posted August 28, 2013 So yesterday I had my pre op appointment. And the surgeon told me that for 10 days after surgery I have to give myself blood thinner shots. I've only heard of one other lady in my bariatric program do this, but apparently it's common, or at least for my program it is. So I'm just wondering if anyone else had to do this and where would you give yourself the shot? Stomach, butt, arm etc.. And also about drains. Do we have drains after surgery and for how long? *of course after I leave the surgeons office I have all these questions lol thanks for the help*
michelle4873 113 Posted August 29, 2013 I had to do the shots due to my history of a blood clot in my last after footsurgery, they were in my stomach..I had no drains or catheters after surgery Sent from my iPhone using VST
ecip78824 20 Posted August 31, 2013 The blood thinners are subcutaneous shots so you inject them into fat. The best spot is usually the belly because it's the easiest spot to "pinch an inch" and the least painful. They are used on anyone with a history of blood clots or increased risk factors for blood clots, so not all patients get them. My doctor only uses them on very high BMI patients, I think it was a BMI of 50 and up.
