I have an underactive thyroid and after much experimentation, I know that the ONLY thing that keeps me from losing my hair is EPO. It's going to be bad enough with the VSG, I want to at least minimize my thyroid-related Hair loss. Only problem?

My EPO pills are like horse pills. HHUUUUGGGEE! I used to worry about swallowing them pre-surgery, there's no way they're going down now!

Does anyone take these and if so, what brand have you found that makes them small it effective?

Does nobody else take EPO? I'd have thought with as many underactive thyroid a as we have on here, most of us would be on it.

I was just found out that I have low thyroid. How much EPO do you take a day? Do you also take medication?

I take leviothyroxin for the thyroid. I used to take 1500 mgs of EPO to keep my hair from falling out due to low thyroid. The difference in the shower is noticeable when I am and am not taking it

Are these gel pills? If not, you can get a cheap pill slicer from Amazon and cut it in half or 3rds if necessary.

They're gels with liquid in them unfortunately.

I used to make a facial with gel Vit A and Royal Jelly and I would poke a hole in the pill and then squeeze the contents out. Not sure how good that would taste, but perhaps you can get an ounce of water/ some other liquid and make it a shot.

Could that work?

Worth trying for sure. Could I just have the facial instead though?

If your thyroxine levels have been correctly modified by medication you won't lose hair at all. Speak to your endocrinologist about this one. I am quite alarmed to hear you were losing hair as a result of under active thyroid (pre-sleeve). I've had under-active thyroid problems for 30 years and have lost v little hair - if any - when medicated.

Before treatment that is common, but I was concerned that Gamergirl was saying she was still having Hair loss after treatment. Once your correct dosage is reached that shouldn't happen anymore.

Could you crush it or melt it in any way or if it is liquid in a capsule could you squeeze it onto a spoon to swallow it? Will losing weight help reduce your thyroid problems?

Interestingly even at a TSH of 1, I lose hair. Not huge heaps like before meds, but slowly and consistently. The EPO stops it. I don't know why I lose it when the TSH is adjusted but I do. Weird.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
