So sick of protein shakes I could barf

Recommended Posts

2 weeks today and I'm so sick of Protein Shakes. I have a varied selection of different brands and flavors, I even got a range of SF Torani syrups, but it is like torture to get them down now. Hopefully will move to soft foods after my dr visit on Thursday and graduate to cottage cheese and blended soft meats. Anyone else in this boat? Suggestions?

The trick for us was to balance Protein shakes with high-protein Soups. I don't think I could have managed without the savory, spicy Soups. The too-sweet Protein Shakes were so, so boring and I started getting nauseated with them.

I've posted recipes for shrimp bisque, lobster bisque, chicken and mushroom Soup, and chicken tortilla Soup that are WLS-Friendly and honestly that's the only way I got through that stage.

Unjury also makes a chicken Soup flavored Protein that I used to survive the liquids stage. The sweet was too much for me. Just know it's worth it in the end and it will seem like nothing when it's all over and you're looking back on it...

I can't stand them either! At first (like the first few days) it was tolerable now I choke one 8oz shake a day to make up what I am lacking Protein wise if I need too. I like you have tried every kind I can think of and the Torani syrups. The Soups like gamer said saved me! Good luck and know you are not alone!

Oh, I couldn't stand any of the shakes after surgery that I liked before surgery. I'm 5 months out and still have big tubs of it in my cabinet. I tried a bunch of different ones to finally find the ones I like. I don't like any of the chocolate or vanilla ones that you make with milk. I found the Isopure ready-to-drink ones in the bottles, used them for a while, but they are really expensive. I'm now using the Syntrax Nectar. They have fruity flavors and you mix them with Water, not milk.

I'm 6 weeks and so sick of them too. I can now gag about 1/2 one down a day. Now that I'm eating soft foods, it's easier to get Protein in. But I'm still not getting enuf so I really do need at least 2 shakes a day but can't manage that. Oh well. Thought about putting some unflavored Protein in some of my foods but I tried it once in ice tea and it was nasty. Definitely not unflavored.

Good luck!

Thanks, everyone. I'll try some of Gamergirl's Soup recipes. I've been having soup, but mostly strained or blended vegs or Beans. Haven't tried blending any Protein. Can't wait for scrambled eggs, that's going to help. I'm even getting sick of Greek Yogurt.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
