jrsno1fan 22 Posted August 26, 2013 I had my first bout of dumping syndrome and I must say it is not pleasant. I know what the possible cause was and believe me I won't have that again. Anyone else having or suffering with Dumping Syndrome?
Arts137 1,811 Posted August 26, 2013 Some argue that the sleeve won't cause dumping syndrome (like bypass does), but a rose by any other name... In any case, the need to go right after eating DOES happen with some. If you have ID'd the 'culprit' food, avoid it for a month or two and carefully try again. Generally sugars are the culprit in dumping sysdrome, and they are things to avoid for many reasons... 3 Mammecan, TwinsMama and vogue reacted to this
vogue 310 Posted August 26, 2013 everytime I have something with over a few gramsd of sugar, Im in the bathroom with the runs within 10 minutes.... Call it dumping or whatever you want, it is NOT pleasant.... at first I thought it was just too soon post-op so I avoided sugar for a while, but I had 2 Cookies a few days ago ( Im days short of one year post-op) and low & below, to the porcelein god I was shackled... 2 Banned member and Mammecan reacted to this
mokee 588 Posted August 26, 2013 I had it constantly for 4 months postop until they did blood work and found out I was anemic. Once I got my Iron up it did not happen anymore. 1 Mammecan reacted to this
tigerbelle 328 Posted August 26, 2013 as Arts said, I don't think it is "officially" dumping syndrome, but it is still unpleasant with many of the same symptoms...I get it on occasion when I eat a food that doesn't agree with my sleeve 1 Arts137 reacted to this
marfar7 1,533 Posted August 26, 2013 My dr insists there no dumping with the sleeve. So I guess my ice cream "dilemma" from last week was just my tummy not liking something. I had a crampy stomach with diarrhea for almost 18 hrs. Couldn't eat till like 4 pm the next day. Hopefully that will change over time (I'm 6 weeks) cuz I wouldn't want to go on if I could never eat ice cream again! Good luck!
tigerbelle 328 Posted August 27, 2013 from what I understand, "dumping" is a lot more than just cramps and diarrhea...there are more physical symptoms than gastro-intestinal ones...things like lightheadedness and racing pulse...I am sure you can look it up on the Internet...still, whatever it is called or the effects, it is not pleasant when you eat something with your sleeve that it doesn't like...I guess that is a good thing and part of the usefulness of the sleeve as a tool
jrsno1fan 22 Posted August 27, 2013 Like you said a rose by any other name... this was every symptom of dumping that is listed. Rapid heartbeat, flushing, lightheaded, dizzy, plus the cramps and diarrhea. The only thing I didn't have is vomiting and probably would have if I weren't still taking Zofran. What I had for dinner I didn't think about it having sugar but afterwards realized it did. Like I said I won't make that mistake again. 1 TwinsMama reacted to this
Jma32 7 Posted August 27, 2013 I am sensitive to sugar. IV dumped twice so far on Gatorade and Powerade both times. I got awful stomach cramps, extreme lightheaded, heart was racing and I felt like i couldn't breath I was so warm. Only lasted about 5 mins but I will tell you in those 5 mins I thought I was dying. Luckily no vomiting just the other end. My nut it Says it was deff dumping and says g2 is fine but I'm afraid to try it! Blah! 1 TwinsMama reacted to this
TwinsMama 483 Posted August 27, 2013 I am too scared with all my vomiting to try sugar. However, I dump every time I try to eat crab...my former fave food. The first time I literally laid on the floor of the bathroom after I vomitted. I told my husband I was dying and he was scared to death. The second time I tried crab (few weeks later) same thing happened. This time at work...I made it to the bathroom to vomit but then had to sit in the bathroom (gross) and wait for it to pass. I won't be trying crab again for a very very long time.
kshepa 77 Posted August 27, 2013 After my gallbladder was removed in 1994, I had dumping syndrome for about 6 months whenever I ate a fatty, or rich meal. I had to run to the bathroom after most meals. After I learned to adjust my diet to eliminate these types of foods, it got much better. Since then, I've always had problems with crab, lobster, Ice cream, buttery rich and sweet foods. Now, with my sleeve, I still have problems with these foods. It's not dumping syndrome, it's an intolerance that just isn't going away and I now finally get it!!! No sweets, no creamy foods of any kind for me. So, I wonder if others sleevers are really having actual dumping syndrome or do they just need to identify foods that they are intolerant to and eliminate them for life? 2 MCM13 and TwinsMama reacted to this
ctsleeve 20 Posted August 28, 2013 I've had dumping episodes a couple times, both from Soups that I think must have been too rich and/or had too much fat. The first was a butternut squash crab bisque from Whole Foods that I brought home and blended, the second was the chicken tortilla Soup at Chili's that the kitchen blended for me at the restaurant. Both times about 20 minutes after I ate I started sweating, heart racing, needed to lie down and then some quality time in the bathroom with the runs. No fun at all. My doctor said usually dumping happens from sugar, but I don't think either of these Soups had a lot of sugar so I think it must have been the fat. Anyway, no fun. I'm really cautious now, and I make most of my food by myself!

Thinner1Day 13 Posted August 28, 2013 I've definitely had dumping syndrome even though my MD assured me that doesn't happen with the sleeve. Once on gelato and once on lobster corn chowder. (What was I thinking??) Severe nausea, rapid heart rate, dizziness. Diarrhea didn't happen until a few hours later. I've had milder episodes (increased heart rate, dizziness, mild nausea) with breads and Protein Bars. My poor sleeve. I keep experimenting but it lets me know when I mess up for sure! It helps to lay on your left side (speeds up gastric emptying) and be still and quiet for at least 30 minutes.
