Losing Weight But Still Feeling Lost

Recommended Posts

I am so happy I had the surgery! BUT.... I am having a really hard time with my addiction to food. I can't eat much but I do still try to binge and I don't know how to stop! I am so lost! I am so worried! I am so scared! I also have no energy at all!! I am lazy and I need to be doing! I want to be excited about losing weight and I want to be getting up and walking and doing this right!! I can't get excited about anything anymore!

I am losing it I think!

Ditto on the therapy or support group. I did 9 months of intensive therapy, at different times having to go in multiple times a week, prior to even discovering I wanted WLS. This is hard work, not just in changing your diet, but also our perspectives. You have made one big positive step. Now it's time to do what might even be the harder part...mental. You can do this!

Hi Lunaya,

The best I can suggest is finding a counselor that deals with disorder eating. And find a support person or talk it out here...

I am a binger too, this surgery does not stop me.

Pain? I ate until pain before having this done, so the pain of eating to much isn't really a deterrent now, if I'm feeling a binge I will eat until I can't anymore then wait and eat again.

What stops me now? I am honest with anyone who will listen. I come here and tell the ugly truth about what I'm feeling with food and emotions.

And at home I tell my husband now EVERYTHING. So he knows when I'm having a rough time. I still fall sometimes.

Last week he left for a few minutes and I ran into the kitchen and stuffed a whole Protein bar in my face while he was gone (I'm a sneak eater)

But after, I came clean and told him what i did. so it's not a secret I talk about what I was feeling when it happened.

I echo what others have said, a counselor/therapist would be an excellent idea. Perusing this forum is a good opportunity to see that you are not alone in the struggles you are having. Many will say that the mental part of this journey is harder than the physical...many of us struggle with obesity in part because we have come to use food to comfort us and/or anesthetize ourselves from feelings we are uncomfortable with.

I also want to encourage you to try not to be too hard on yourself (something I recognize because I do that too)....from reading your post, I feel like that may be a tendency that you have, and that negative self-talk adds to your feelings of inadequacy...the journey will be bumpy, but promise yourself that you will be open to the experience and take things as the come.

I feel your pain. My son made pumpkin muffins tonight and they just called to me. I ate 1 1/2, but could have eaten the entire pan, I'm sure, as nothing seems to bother my sleeve of steel. It will be our battle for life.

I struggle with this every single day. This surgery took away my best friend and comfort - food. I have been seeing a therapist regularly and it helps, but I just have to take one moment at a time and try to be honest with myself about what I am feeling and will food actually help. Hang in there, you are on a long journey. We didn't develop the food problem and gain the weight overnight, and it isn't going to get better quickly either. I am finally at the point where logic and feeling are in synch (most of the time) and I realize that eating over bad feelings isn't going to help me deal with what ever is bothering me.

Psychotherapy is best for us emotional eaters ,and just as others have said we didn't get this way over night. Depression and emotional eating have to be treated separate in order to be sucessful. So don't beat your self up just take it one goal at a time. No one said you have to have wls to loose 100 pounds by a certain date. This is not a race it is your life. So make better bad chocies if you can. I'm sure by now you probally feel better knowing that you are not alone. This is life its never going to be easy..... Take care and please keep us updated.

Wanted to start by congratulating you on your weight loss.....your doing great. I agree with what everyone on here has said.....you definitely need to get some counseling. You might want to talk to your doctor about depression also. The lack of energy and ability to get excited about anything are symptoms of it. Hope you can find the path to loving yourself and your life. Best Wishes. :)

I'm glad you made the call. Whenever your feeling a binge day coming on just come here and talk about it! Trust me it helps, I find so much support when I'm feeling down and the voices here give me strength.

Oh and the exercise? You know I'm a lazy slob!

Really it's just one of those things that I have to force myself to do. Just start out making the commitment. It doesn't have to be long, my therapist told me. going outside and walking around the block is good enough. just make a commitment to do it everyday. :)

Take it one day one goal at a time. I believe we all suffer from the habits of pre op lifestyles. Here lately it seems when I even attempt at eating foods that I used to love now I either end up with real bad gas pains or just uncomfortable feelings period. This has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Don't feel to bad though looking at your ticker you have lost a lot of weight. Loosing weight and pushing yourself are very hard even with the surgery .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
