How to measure when eating out?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any ideas on how to eyeball food amounts when eating out?

I have a Breakfast meeting coming up' date=' and I'm wondering how to figure out how to make sure I don't overeat.

I can only eat 1/4 cup max at a time, but it's not as if I can bring my measuring cups to the meeting to make sure I don't go over the amount.

At home- I measured out scrambled eggs and then put them in a tiny bowl, but that's not going to be happening at the restaurant.

I'm trying to avoid the foaming/queasy feeling that happens when overeating. Socially- I'd be a bit mortified if I had to food makes its way back up.[/quote']

I was sleeved on 6/24. Now when you go out just order one scramble egg, some Decaf tea or coffee. And take your time, talk in between. You'll be ok

Thanks for the link Jen- this is a great resource! I'm also going to give the plate idea a try. It's my first time eating out post surgery so I'm feeling oddly nervous.

The first couple of times eating out were scary. It gets easier each time, and as you heal and have more food choices. I am almost 6 months out and I am so happily surprised at all the great healthy choices that have been right under my nose all along!

Good luck, you will do great!

I've never measured my food. My stomach lets me know if I'm eating too much.

I measure my food at home but I don't when I'm out. For the first time in what seems like forever I can actually feel full and then I stop when I have those signals.

Restaurant always have a side order menu (ie: 1 egg .99cents, hash browns $2.00, etc). I always order a side of 1 egg and maybe if I'm really hungry a side of hashbrowns (no potato bashing plz!) and I'll eat maybe 4-6 bites of it. Potatoes are something I can't reheat later (taste nasty), so it's kind of a waste. Hubby always orders veggies instead of potatoes or toast cuz he's a low carber, so I can't just take a few bites of his hashbrowns.

I don't even measure my food. I just eat till I'm satisfied (usually about 6-10 bites, depending on what it is). I'm losing slower than most people but I started at 174 so I expected to lose slower than someone starting at 250. My dr is super pleased with my progress.

Good luck! And enjoy going out to eat. Don't stress so much about measuring. Isn't that why you got wls in the first place? So you wouldn't have to diet again? I certainly did!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
