Personally, I believe public school funds should be used for private schools.
Why? They are already being funded by the tuition that the parents usually have to pay. Most local private schools I've seen have been better funded than the local public schools. If they get funds from the public school funds, then their private funds should also be redistributed to other schools. And they should have to live up to the same standards and restrictions that public schools have to, if they want those public funds.

On the Rush, Coulter, and O'Reilly thing: I don't think I can really articulate just how much I despise them. I think they are antithetical to everything an American should be. They truly disgust me on a level I haven't experienced before. I mean, I don't just dislike them or disapprove of them, I really can't stand them. Just listening to Rush's radio program or watching Coulter or O'Reilly on television makes my hackles raise. I almost literally see red whenever they open their mouths.

Whatever funding would have gone to the public schools for those kids should go to the schools that the kids are attending. I just believe it should. It makes sense to me.

Parents of kids at public schools have all sorts of fundraisers and donations for their public schools, but I'm sure you wouldn't argue that those additional funds should be redistributed to private schools, would you?

I don't much care for O'Reilly. But I think Rush is insightful and Coulter is belly-laugh hilarious. I feel about Al Franken the way you feel about them.

But that isn't tuition. If they want to give their money to a school, that's their business. They aren't required to give the money just so their kids can go to school there. If those private schools (mostly religious) are following the same laws and regulations as public schools (e.g., prayer, science, etc.), I have no problem with them receiving government funds. But until they do, I don't think they should be paid to give a non-secular education.

I just can't get past their absolute bigotry and asshole-ishness to listen to them long enough to see if they are insightful or funny.

Not all private schools are religious. I went to a private high school that had no religious affiliation at all.

I think public education is substandard (besides the fact that public schools can often be physically dangerous places for kids). Some parents kill themselves (figuratively) to send their kids to private schools because they want their kids to be properly educated. So I think their tax dollars, which should have gone to pay for their kids' educations but didn't because the public schools aren't up to par, should go to where they're actually being educated.

gadgetlady -- I see you are from Orange County, one of the wealthiest counties in the U.S. So I'm hardly surprised that you are conservative. After all, the point of having money is to keep it. Unfortunately, many of us don't have money and we'd like a chance to get some. I don't think Rush, Anne and the other right wingnuts are willing to give us that chance. After all they are laughing all the way to the bank.

LOL! I was conservative long before I moved to Orange County. I was a conservative from the age of 6, when someone told me what taxes were.

Are you saying there's a limited amount of money in this country and Rush, Anne, and other wingnuts like me have taken yours and/or kept you from rightfully claiming it? Do you think there are any left wingnuts who are wealthy? I could name a few dozen just off the top of my head. I could probably get to 100 ridiculously wealthy liberals without doing any research. And I think if anyone wants to see everyone get the chance to make -- AND KEEP -- their hard-earned money, it's conservatives.

You know, the more I think about it the more that statement really pisses me off! I work damn hard to have the privilege of living here. My husband and I own two full-time businesses, I run another part-time business, and I homeschool two kids because I don't want to farm them off to the public (or even the private!) school system. I'm tired and worn out and yet I still find time to do volunteer work and donate time and money to charity. So yes, I'm conservative and I live in Orange County -- and I'm happy and unapologetic.

I think we should make a distinction between secular private schools and religious private schools. Like I said earlier, I have no problems with government funds going to secular private schools. I do, however, have a problem with government funds going to religious schools that don't have to follow the same standards and regulations that govern public schools. I think that if a school wants to receive government funds, they should follow those regulations, including those regarding prayer in school.

And I think public schools should follow basic guidelines like EDUCATION in school!

That's true, but it has nothing to do with what we are talking about. I have absolutely nothing against private schools. The bottom line is that any school that wants to receive public funding has to play by certain rules, and those rules include the Constitution. If they don't want to do that, then they can't receive government funds.

Is public education lacking? Yes. Does that mean our tax dollars should fund schools that are, in many cases, discriminatory and non-secular? No.

laurend: You are absolutely right. My kids went mostly to parocial schools and the question of our not paying taxes for public schools was on the agenda of the Republicans big time. I thought it was wrong then and still do now, and for exactly the reason you stated.

It's a shame that so many people feel they must send their children to private schools to get a quality education. It's a self-fullfilling prophesy. The more we send our kids to private schools, the worse the public schools have become because of the lack of interest of those parents in the public school system. And of course even though Bush declared that education is important on his agenda (I mean afterall that goes without saying since Laura was a teacher), doesn't mean that schools have been improved since he's been president. My neighbor works in the "No child left behind" program. She says it's a joke.

darrell: what man makes Hillary look like Rush?

For those so againt Rush, what are your feelings about Al Franken?

Not real fond of him either. Or Stephanie Miller for that matter. I don't personally think Al is as bad as Rush, but to me, many other Left radio hosts are just the other side of the Rush coin. Hateful is Hateful, no matter what your politics.

I agree, which is why the only talk radio I listen to is "All Things Considered" on NPR.

gadgetlady: Thanks, that explains that.

As for Ann Coulter, I get the creeps when I see her name in print, much less hear her voice. She and Rush should hook up. They've just got to love the ground each other walks on.

When Ann Coulter first started out, I thought she was a very attractive young lady. The longer the hateful stuff in her head came tumbling out in shocking sound bytes, the uglier she became. Now I find her looks and demeanor to be incredibly revolting. But lets face it, she made a name for herself and got her mug on TV, I'm glad she's the one who actually has to sleep with herself, not me.

I think Ann Coulter is a witch. The things she said about some of the 9/11 widows is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
