2 week pre-op diet - feeling like a failure

Recommended Posts

My two week pre-op liquid only diet began on 8/20 and my surgery is on 9/3. It's been so hard. I've been starving, nauseous, and gassy. I tried so hard to stay on track but I really cracked this morning. I felt so physically weak. I cracked open a small can of tuna fish ( which I only ate half of one serving) and some raw spinach and gobbled it down. It didn't have a chance. I just needed that little bit, and now I feel so much better. But now I feel like I failed. I don't want any complications during the surgery because of this. I even lost 5 lbs since Tuesday. I'm just really worried.

Any thoughts, advice? Thanks.

The sleeve will remedy all that. I had no preop diet save for the 24 hour fast before surgery. You are not a failure.

Thank you so much for that. I really needed to hear something. I'm stressed and getting depressed over not being able to stick to this diet 100%.

Yes. It's been tough mentally also. Everywhere I go I feel that people are eating in my face. Lol sometimes I get so offended, but I know that they are not the ones that need to change, I do. I just feel very pressured right now. I called the surgeons office on day 2 and asked if I could just even have a piece of fish and they told me no.

I start my pre-op diet in a week and I am dreading the feeling but I have waited a long time for this. I do take up to 600mgs per day of chromium (as recommended by my holistic doctor) on a regular basis. I don't even know if I will be able to take it up to the surgery. You gave me some questions to ask. Chronium definitely does help keep the hunger away. Also, drink Water plenty of water and hang in there. I think you thought about it (eating) and you chose healthy choices. But, there is a reason you can't eat before your surgery. They need to decrease the size of your liver so that when they perform the surgery the liver will not be in the way. So, its for your health and wellness. Remeber that as you run these last few miles of the journey. You will make it!

Yea. I didn't have many questions at first. Now I have a lot. For example, why are some ppl asked to do a pre op diet and others aren't?

Girl you are not a failure at all. I also had a two week liquid pre-op diet. It was such a struggle, not proud but there were times of chewing and spitting just for taste and I even licked a piece of Pasta with sauce. Sad but true. I got so hungry one day I chewed on some raw broccoli and you would have thought It was a chicken leg the way I devoured it. You are only human. Do the best you can and know that It will only help with your recovery. I thought for sure that my surgeon was gonna tell me that I screwed up. Well I was sleeved on 8/21 and the Doc told me my liver looked great and that I nailed the liquid diet. You can do this! When you wake up from surgery you won't even be thinking about food and you won't feel ravenous, I promise. What saved me during the liquid diet was the SF popsicles and flavored broth. Good luck and hang in there!

Okay...so.... don't sweat it. On Day 3 of my 7 day liquid diet, I had a total freak out. I ate 4 pastry crisps (those Special K hundred calorie things). Then I had a PB&J. I felt horrible about it. Then I got back on the wagon. I had surgery on Thursday and did great. Post-op is easier than pre-op IMO. Hang in there girl. You can do it!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
