"That line still has a long way to go"

Recommended Posts

I had a 5 week follow up appointment with my surgeon (with whom I've had a generally great experience) on Wednesday. I lost 10 lbs on my 2 week pre-op liquid diet, and 15 more lbs since surgery. Granted, I've been a bit surprised that I haven't lost more, given my size, but I'm not unhappy with the loss (especially if slow and steady loss gives me a better chance at not having to have plastic surgery). However, when my surgeon pulled up my chart on his computer, his comment was "Here's the line that shows your weight loss. That line still has a long way to go." Yet there was no mention of anything else I could try to get the weight to come off faster. Needless to say, it was a bit deflating to have what I clearly know and see all day everyday reiterated, when I'm following my post-op instructions faithfully and have very little control over how quickly or slowly the weight comes off. I wish I would lose a bit faster, but it seems my body has it's own timeline in mind. Sigh.

Wow... Is all I can say. So much for bedside manner! :P

Don't take it to heart. He must of forgotten that a real live human being was sitting next to him..

Just keep doing the things you know you should be doing and all will work out :)

Your doing good. Some is better than none. Can you go see a NUT to help with eating clean or to just clarify if there is a problem or not. I did utilize my NUT a lot and it was very helpful for me..... :P

Blame it on Florida.

Ft. Lauderdale to be exact.

Sensitivity and ethics class started right after spring break. Big benders affect retention.

Either that or he's a jerk.

Do NOT get frustrated with yourself. Some people lose slower than others. My Dr wasn't especially happy with how slowly I've been losing but she was more concerned about the long term than the short term. I never felt like a loser just because I wasn't having huge losses.

Keep up your great work, do what feels best for your body, and let yourself enjoy this process as much as possible. Best wishes to you!!

I think the professionals that work with us sometimes can be not so professional. Even passive-aggressive.

Perhaps you should email him and let him know how dissappointing his remark was, and how you feel he could go about handling it better with the next patient. Would be very interesting to know his response.

I say this ALOT, but I really do think it would help - please post doctors names in the subject line, it helps people when searching for information related to a doctor, when choosing one.

Thank you, everyone - the affirmation really helps. As I said, my doctor has generally been great, so this is the first time I've had an issue. However, if it happens again at my next appointment, I will be sure to address it. I think this time I was just taken back by it since that was the first time anything like that had been said.

And I do have a follow up appointment with my NUT on 9/17...so it will be interesting to see what her thoughts are.

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
