I'm meeting with a surgeon on September 16. If I'm going to self pay, about how long does it take for tests, counseling, et cetera before surgery date is set?

I am also self pay and have just started my process. I went for my initial visit with the surgeon on August 5th and I'm currently in the process of having all of my tests and appointments done. I go back on Sept. 16th to follow up with my surgeon and hope to have an October date!! So to me, that's pretty quick!

I am self pay and had my consult on Tuesday at 10am. By 11:30 my surgery and pre-op work dates and times had been scheduled. I requested a surgery date in December but I was told I pretty much could get in whenever I wanted. I guess that's the only advantage of going self pay :)

Also, after talking with me, my surgeon waived my psych consult requirement. As far as other things like nutritional counseling - I was given a super thorough "owner's manual" and also set up with a pre-op class with the nutritionist about 3 weeks before surgery. I asked him about losing weight ahead of time and he said he wasn't so much concerned about losing weight ahead of time but that at about six weeks prior I should really be thinking of trying to focus on not gaining anything and that any loss would just be a bonus.

Who are you going with?

I had previously considered surgery years ago and was denied by insurance so this is kinda like my second visit. I am a self pay and I had my initial consult on August 15th and have my surgery date set for September 16th. The time frame is based solely on how quick I got my pre-reqs completed. The process has been completely fast, but for me I'm happy about that. Less time to be nervous about anything :) Best of luck!

I can say that my surgery was covered by insurance but due to high bmi was able to forgo the 6 month requirements, so I first met with my surgeon on October 18th 2012, started my preop testing the next week, and had surgery December 10th 2012. Could have been a little quicker if it hadn't been for thanksgiving getting in the way, but took about 2 weeks to get all my preop testing done, then had a 2 week preop diet to get in, so I would think a minimum of 1 month.

I could have definitely been a quicker process. It all depends on how quick you complete your pre-ops and I wasn't rushing the process. You also have to factor in the availability of doctors schedule and the hospital surgery schedule. Five weeks is quick enough for me :)

I self paid (in most part, but eventually fought that with insurance and got most of it back)and started my visits early Novenber, sleeved January 4th, but I also had a bit of urgency due to a tumor in my stomach.

I was self pay. had my Consultation and was able to schedule surgery that day. I could have scheduled it for two weeks out provided I was willing to start my pre op diet the next day and get in for my pre op tests and required NUTvisit. Self pay steps you to the front of the line.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
