Juicing and liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you can use a juicer and make homemade Popsicles on the pre surgery and post surgical liquid phase. I'm nervous about starting those phases but am already starting to wean myself off of normal food like breads and pastas. It's lean and green and Protein Meal Replacements for me.

There may be some foods that send the wrong signals to the stomach, even if blended into a liquid. For example I know fatty foods slow down how fast the body moves things along to the intestines. (Why fried foods go so well during a night out drinking!)

Best to ask the NUT.

Also, whe do u start fresh fruits and veggies? My plan doesn't let me have fresh (raw) fruits and veggies for 8 weeks. Can't even have them made into smoothis :(

You might want to check ur instructions. Other that that I think its a great idea

Pre-surgery should not be a problem unless you are doing low-carb, and then you will want to be careful because fruit/vegetable juice has a lot more carbs in juice form then if you were eating them in their whole state. Post-surgery, they are certainly healthier than the artificial popsicles you buy in the store, but, my NUT told me that some people cannot tolerate raw veggies and fruits in the beginning. I'm not sure if it the Fiber in fruits and veggies or the enzymes. Maybe you can make yourself a few right before surgery and just see how they work for you- don't make a bunch because you might be wasting a lot of money on produce. Once you are off liquids, you will want to focus on Protein and not filling up on veggies, but you could try adding Protein Powder to your juice and see how that works. I had no problem with raw fruits or veggies, but I didn't try any until four weeks after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
