Supervised diet 4 insurance approval & losing weight!

Recommended Posts

I have been currently completing my insurance requirements for approval to get sleeve. I'm doing the 6 month supervised diet program now an I'm losing weight fast. If I loose to much weight will I still be able to have wls? Don't they go by your initial weight? I've lost weight before with diets but the weight always comes back worse! I would rather get the surgery for the long term affect.

Every insurance is different however some require you to have a certain BMI on order to qualify for WLS. My insurance requires me to have a bmi of 35 or more and at least one co morbidity like sleep apnea or high blood pressure. I'm not an expert but that's what I have learner so far. The Surgery will help us reach our goals! Best of luck to you!!!

Houston,

The only way you will know for sure is to check with your insurance company for your coverage criteria. My insurance is through United Health Care and for WLS they use Optum as a coordinator. My case manager from Optum told me they use your initial weight, and if you lose weight during your six month medically supervised diet you will not be disqualified from having surgery if you drop below the minimum BMI required per policy coverage. The coverage criteria for my employer requires a minimum BMI of 35 with one comorbidity and if you are at a BMI of 40 or greater no comorbidity is required.

Good luck to you.

Hi I just met with my second surgeon today at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and I was told that even though I am completing my 6 month requirements that they used your start weight for your insurance because they know that most doctors required you to try and loose weight before your surgery. I hope this helps.
