What's the Worst Diet Advice You've Received?

Recommended Posts

My father is convinced I will lose weight if I eat two double cheeseburgers a day from Mcdonalds and remove the bun.

More on that here:

What's the worst advice you've ever gotten?

That is horrible advice! Just quit eating.

I've also heard the whole "get a hobby".

When I told my (former) primary care doc that I was getting the sleeve and she was really against it... she gave me a list of cookbooks I should buy. Like, if I could just have the right cookbook I could go from 300 to 155 pounds... geesh. A doctor.

I was a fat child. I have this early memory of my mom's friend telling her not to let me eat after 6:00 pm, like eating after dark is the true cause of the obesity epidemic. Like ghosts and vampires, fat creeps up on you at night.

My brother's advice to me? "Just eat more salads." Ah hah, problem solved!

Years back there was a show (Dateline, 60 minutes, I can't remember.) that had a Dr that did a study that he said found, if you don't deny yourself and eat whatever and however much you want at any time, you'll eventually get tired of junk foods and lose weight. I think I was in HS at the time and was working really hard to watch what I ate and work out so I didn't try it (though I was tempted).

Well a year or so later they did a follow up...turns out the women in the study not only didn't lose weight...they all gained A LOT and then none of them ever got tired living on a diet of junk food. WORST ADVICE EVER!

I still remember that follow up and how upset those women were that they gained. Funny thing, they felt they were the failures and not the Dr that clearly gave them bad advice.

So all this to say...yeah anyone can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, and you won't gain weight.

This! My Dr also tried the whole, let's try every diet TOGETHER and it will help you lose. Needless to say, 3 years later and I'm sleeved.

I'm literally laughing so hard I hurt. I want a shirt that says...Don't eat after dark or else ghosts, vampires, and FAT creeps up on you at night. Of course this has to be in that chiller font.

Best laugh of my day!!

HAHHA You guys are hilarious! And so is that advice! Oh, if we just didn't eat at night, only ate salads and could find the magic cookbook.

And as for eating whatever you want to get sick of it-- yeah right! Wouldn't that be nice.

I have a TON of healthy cookbooks and that didn't work. Now if I had a personal chef to cook them for me....maybe that would have helped!

My worst diet advice came from a personal trainer who was also my sister-in-law at the time. She was always promoting some fad diet. You know, eat these specific foods in this order each day. She also did that cleanse where you just drink Water with lemon and cayenne peper for a week. Whatever!

My ex boss told me her secret diet tip. Drink lemon juice mixed with hot sauce and Water. As much as you can drink every day for a month. She swore by it cause it "worked" she lost weight. I always wanted to say WELL DUH! Dumbest idea ever.

I had one of my mom's friends actually tell me that ice had more calories than Water. Of course, my grandma always told me that diet sodas would make me fat. Maybe she was right about that one.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
