This is a Public Service Announcement concerning Stalls & Plateaus

Recommended Posts

All righty then, time for us to compile our favorite posts about Stalls and Plateaus so we can help all who come here wondering why they are stalled, and for those of us who think we know it all, to maybe learn something new too.

Would you contribute yours? Once we have a few, I'll compile it into one big list and who knows, maybe they'll pin it here?

Only problem is, as soon as they pin it, conversation on this forum will probably drop to half of what it currently is :P (Yes that was cheeky, yes I should be ashamed of myself, no I am not.). Did I need to re-read these myself this morning? Yes, I did.

Articles I found helpful:

Even Gastric Bypass Patients hit weight-loss plateaus

Weight Loss Stall or Plateau

Weight Loss Stalls & Plateaus

Carmelita's Denoument

Dr. Simpson's 10 Commandments

Of Whooshes & Squishy Fat

A new look at weight loss plateaus

A predictable cycle of weight loss

Stalling at 10% of body weight loss

What are some of your favorite posts or articles on Stalls?

Edit: added a few more

Great reading. Thank you. You should ask in the technical section to get this pinned to the top of this forum.

Hey Suzy, was hoping to get some vets or others to suggest their on favorites. I know some people have posted some inspiring posts on this too, and I thought we could get a nice compendium together before we asked for it to be pinned.

This is an interesting article that appropriately explains our initial "weight loss"...don't get discouraged when you read that we didn't really lose fat initially.

Well, you already got my favorite one. They really should be required reading when you go to your first doctors visit. But honestly, even if they were, most of us wouldn't remember it.....all we can focus on at that point is how much weight we're going to lose. For me, the second my doc told me his goal weight for me.....I didn't hear anything else. I was like...are you flicking kidding? I was heavier than that in junior high. But it really needs to be pounded home before surgery. That 6 months I spent visiting with the nutritionist, we could have spent a little more time on "realistic expectations" IMO, and a little less on how many calories are in a cucumber.

Oh I totally stole that one from you! I loved that one.

I'm hoping people have others. In some of the other threads, people have posted links to other member's posts but I can't find them.

Thank you for posting these! I am only 8 weeks post surgery but have already found myself plateauing twice. It can be very frustrating! Thanks again. :)

Hi Guys, I am 4 weeks post op and I have been at a 3 week stall.

I AM JUST Soooooooo Over it !!!

However, I did make an appointment with my nutritionist last week and she did tell me about the 3 week stall. No joke I was in tears in her office. I was thinking, I stalled at ONE WEEK. She adjusted my diet slightly an told me I should just about be at the end of it. As of today... I'm not.

She told me I was doing everything right and to just keep it up and she "promised" me I would see the weight falling off soon. I don't.

All I can truly vouch for is that people have told me they can see a difference. I would say they were just trying to lift my spirits and my bottom lip....BUT.... I have gone down 3 pants sizes post surgery. How I DON'T KNOW. The scale not only says that I'm in a stall, but I put on two pounds. ( Big Sigh ) .

Sorry guys ( the men ).... What I was going to say is that I may have som PMS Water weight going on as well.

All I know is that I've always been told the scale doesn't lie. I lost like crazy week one. My nutritionist told me that was Fluid and to keep strong and come to the support group. I was too depressed to go to the support group. Now how crazy is THAT. Yes, I really do know better. Oh well, long story cutting short. It is VERY, VERY depressing but I am just going to go with the flow like I'm told because as of now theirs not a thing more I can do. It will happen. (Another Sigh) I really hope so.

Excuse my misspelled words in prior reply. I'm pooped and need to go to sleep.

Thanx for letting me vent. Sometimes you just have to get it out.

It may not change anything but I do "feel" a little better.

Night All.

Oh I think we have all felt like crying during the stalls! I knew if was going to happen, I had read everything out there, and yet, when I stalled just as everyone said I would, I was not a happy camper! I wasn't losing inches during mine either so that was a double insult! Intellectually we may all get it, but it's no fun is it?

I hope you do go to the support group, and that this changes for you. Three weeks is a long time to be patient, and I sure feel for you. (((Hugs)))

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
