surgery and kidney stones

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery in 2 days. I have had kidney stones on and off since 1994. Most recent yr I get them every couple of months. Ive narrowed it down to being an ice tea drinker. Well 4 days ago I had another one come out of the kidney. So now I am dealing with the pain of it traveling down the uriture. My question is to everyone should I go ahead and do my surgery in 2 days or reschedule it after my stone passes. This is making me crazy because I have worked to hard to get where I am. Mentally and physically. I would appreciate any advice. Especially those who have had stones before. I did email the surgeon and he said to come in the day of surgery and he will assess me.

It depends on the location of the stone and size. You wouldn't want it to get stuck and require a procedure to have it removed during your healing process. I would definitely let your surgeon know so he can decide if your surgery needs to be postponed until the stone passes. If he says it is okay for surgery, the fluids you get in the hospital may help it pass. The post-op pain meds should help with your stone pain. If your stones are from drinking iced tea, you probably have Calcium oxalate stones.

Hope you get some relief and good luck with your surgery.

Try the bump and jump. Works for hubby. Drink Water and jump flat footed. Water acts like a hammer and pushes it out. Google bump and jump for kidney stones.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
