When should i start going to the gym

Recommended Posts

I am 2 weeks post-op today. Had my sleeve done Aug. 5th. I want to know when it's ok to go to the gym and walk the treadmill? I also LOVE riding my bike, when should I be able to get back to that?

I wasn't cleared for anything other than walking (a treadmill would be fine as long as I only walked, no jogging) for four weeks after surgery. After that, I was okayed to gradually add in more exercise as long as I wasn't hurting myself.

Your surgeon's office may have other plans but I think what I was told is a pretty common post-VSG instruction.

Thank you! That's kind of what I was expecting... I was reading that because of the weight loss and small amount of calories your body looses all muscle first so it was good to work out to let your body know you need the muscle so it will target burning up the body fat.

Thank you for that! Just out of curiosity are your incisions healed?

All I could do was walk for four weeks, then no exercise restrictions.

That's what I'm now being told. Plus the incision above my belly button the scab came off in the shower so it's not really closed.

Be really careful with that incision- the one near my belly button never healed and when I started going to the gym it opened up the first week and then for five weeks I had to go twice a week for wound care which was SO inconvenient and then when my gallbladder came out I had to have the incision revised. So if you still have a scab at four weeks, have your surgeon check it before you start working out. My new incision has healed very nicely this time around, so yeah for that!

I am one week out today and my surgeon told me he wants me walking 30 min per day. He doesnt care if it is on a treadmill or outside. He doesnt care if it is 10 mins 3x/day but thats his expectation. He said nothing else, but then said no lifting over 15 lbs? This is all on a written form so I didnt ask him about it because it wasnt a conversation. I have an exercise bike, and an elliptical, I feel the elliptical is a no, but Im thinking the recumbent bike it ok? I dont have a treadmill unfortunately.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
