Cardiac Concerns...please share

Recommended Posts

Good Evening, everyone! I will try to keep.this short. I had 1 heart stent placed in March 2012 after 100% blockage from bcp(blood clot). I weigh 225 and I am 5ft in height. I take baby aspirin, blood pressure, cholesterol, and 1 plavix a day. I also started with severe acid reflux since 2011...it is draining!!!My family has a bad history of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and my mom is almost 500 pounds. I want this surgery badly bc I feel that I was given a second chance at life after my heart procedure and I want to protect my heart plus get off of all these meds. I am just 32 years of age. I am fairly active...dancing,walking, and swimming. My only concern is my heart during surgery, internal bleeding, and blood clots. Can anyone with past/current cardiovascular issues share their story? Thanks in advance.

My story isn't anything to yours but I have bradycardia (heart rate 40bpm) and problems with my right atrium (top part of the heart) i have had many many cardiologist appointments ore surgery and I knw cardiac team will be on standby in surgery invade something happens. Maybe they would do something similar for you? As long as they are aware of your history surgeons are normally pretty good at weighing up the risks. And if they think its too risky they will most probably be completely honest with you :) best of luck let me know how you go

Thanks so much for the response. The hospital has an attached cardiology unit. They told me to stop taking the plavix and baby aspirin for 10 days before surgery to prevent internal bleeding. I have a cardiology appt this week for my clearance letter, but he wanted me to do it on my own. I will definitely keep you posted! :)

I would think they may have you do a stress test or lexiscan as part of surgery clearance if they are concerned.

My gosh excuse all the spelling mistakes stupid auto correct haha. I know with mine they wanted a 24hr holster monitor, an ECG and a echocardiograph (ultrasound of the heart) and also the stress test (walking on a treadmill connected to monitors). I assume they would want something similar. I was the same as you and I personally go and see the cardiologist to get the clearance letters and such. I have my appointment in a few hours actually still let you know how I go. I think it's great your being so proactive good on you :)

Just saw the cardiologist what a run around. He doesn't want my surgery because in his opinion weight loss surgery isn't necessary which made me furious. So now I have to drive 2 hours away to have a stress test done tomorrow to hopefully get clearance for surgery. My only advice would be get clearance as soon as you can before surgery to prevent running around to get things organised! Feeling very frustrated.

Hi JessikaB, my ekg's always come up with something abnormal so I expect it once I go for clearance. I have 3 more monthly dr. visits (insurance purposes) before my 2nd appt.with my surgeon to submit the paper work for approval. My question is should I just do the EKG now or should I wait for till I'm closer to my 2nd appt. with the surgeon? When are you scheduled for your surgery?

Do it now. Mine was abnormal 2 weeks pre op and it was a very stressful rush to get all of the follow up tests that showed all was normal. Just my 2 cents as I have been there!

Sorry for the slow reply. I would definitely do it now. I am scheduled for 9/11 and I've had hell trying to get clearance for the surgery to go ahead. If at worst they have to do another one closer to your surgery so be it but if you already have it done it might save some running around.

Update: I saw my cardiologist yesterday and my blood pressure was 116/70..whooo hooo. I dropped 10 pounds and he is very supportive of the surgery. All I have is the STRESS test next week, then I will receive my clearance letter. Oh, my (echo) ultrasound was superb. I am nervous but ready for change. I am calling today to put my deposit with Ready4Achange.< /p>

Good news: The nurse at my cardiologist just called and moved my stress test to this Friday (8/23) instead of next Thursday. I am so excited!!!! Does anyone else have updates?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
