I have 4 kids. 12,10,8 and 5. I really do not want to be telling lots of people about the surgery at this time. I do feel I need to tell my kids something before I go to hospital. I am hoping the kids can understand private vs a secret. I do not want to tell them to keep it a secret, but don't want them to blab it at school either.

I am worried about me being in the hospital and things not being normal for them as my husband is not great at day to day stuff. I can see my girls being a mess at school and telling the teachers. I wonder if I should put my not wanting to share it aside and tell their teachers anyhow, giving them a heads up.

What have others done to help the kids understand.

I have a 14 year old son. I told him about half way into my journey. I told him I was keeping it just between a few close friends and family for now and asked him to do the same. He has been fine with it and not mentioned it to anyone.

I'm in the same boat with kids ages 10 to 3 and my mum went and told them I was going to surgery! I guess it's for the best. I had to show them my belly and bandages so they would know to be careful around me.

As for telling everyone it's very hard for kids to remember not to. It's really not anyone's business what kind of surgery you had tho.

This is an awesome question. I think it's going to be hard for my 3yo to understand because she's very attached to her mommy. It even chokes me up thinking about being away from her. I think my 10 and 12 year old will have a well understanding and ask a lot of questions. Just not sure how to approach it and I know they'll have lots of questions!

I did forget to mention that he did want to know if I would leave the hospital skinny or if I would be the same size AND more importantly he was concerned once I did loose weight that I would steal his clothes. (Because I want to wear boy skinny jeans and character t shirts)

I think it's best to tell the teachers that you will be out for some surgery, no need to specify what kind. If the kids are upset at school, or misbehave, it would help if the teachers could be a little more understanding if they knew that kids were reacting to your being gone.

My kids told their teachers all KINDS of stuff over the years that I really wish they hadn't, but I think teachers have learned to be discreet and are unlikely to spread it about.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
