How do you stick to 3-4 meals a day?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 5 weeks post op and 1 week into soft foods. I can literally eat about 4 bites before I'm done. Then I'm starving in 90 minutes. yesterday I ate about 6-7 times. My post op instructions say that I should be moving out of the "grazing with full iquids" stage to eating just 3 meals a day with soft foods. 4 bites=about50-75 calories. X3=150-225 calories + my Protein shake (even at 2 a day, and I usually only get 1 a day) = 200 calories. Thats a whopping 350-425 calories a day. I will literally starve

Went to Red Robin yesterday and at 2 bites of turkey lunchmeat out of a sandwich and that was enuf. Do most people eat this much? Or is my sleeve too tight?

Its funny how different the programs are. My doc & nut say you can have 2 Snacks, but make it count. Usually my snacks are Protein (cheese, Jerky, edamame). If I didn't have my snacks daily I too would be under 500 calories and not meet my protein goal. I am almost 5 months out and down 82 pounds.

The same thing happens to me if I get away from thin refried Beans or Soups. If it requires chewing i can't do much of it.

I am a true believer in listening to my body. It might take some time to figure out what your body is saying. If you are hungry, then I think you should eat. I am supposed to eat 5-6 meals a day. That breaks down to 2 Snacks and 3 meals, but my meals/snacks tend to be the same caloric amount anyways. I think you will find a difference when you move on from soft foods and onto dense foods. I don't think you will feel as hungry, but if you do there is probably someone on this site who went through the same thing and can give you helpful words. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
