Hiatal Hernia repair?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had a Hiatal Hernia repaired and it is too tight? I am just over one month post op and i cant eat anything except for Jello, pudding, or yogurt. Every time i try to eat anything it goes down and comes back up. I also feel like food gets stuck in my throat. I have had to go into the hospital twice now due to dehydration because when i try to eat anything i get sick and can't tolerate any liquids. They tell me that the Hernia repair is still "swollen" and it will take time for me to be able to eat and the doctor moved me back to liquid stage for a few more weeks. If anyone else dealt with this how long did it take before you could eat? Im so depressed about not being able to eat.

I had a hiatal hernia repair during my sleeve surgery. They found the hernia during my pre-op endoscopy. I never knew I had it and post-op it didn't bother me at all. I am not familiar with the feeling you describe. Hopefully, someone else knows. Good luck.

I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time. The first week was rough, but now I'm able to drink liquids easily as long as I take tiny sips. Greek Yogurt and SF pudding go down easily too. I don't start solid food for another 2 weeks, but I don't anticipate any problems. Initially it felt like there was a golf ball in my throat, and I had shortness of breath and chest pain, but that's mostly resolved now. I'm going back to work on Monday, so I hope my endurance improves over the next three days.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
